With their traditional 'slash and burn' agriculture outlawed and production of their main cash crop  -  opium  -  banned,  the Akha have had to seek out other means to survive.   Many young Akha girls are sent to work as prostitutes,  while the place of opium  -  used both recreationally and medicinally in tradition Akha culture  -  has been taken by heroin.   With little awareness of the dangers of sharing needles  and in a society that has a relaxed sexual code,  the Akha face a two-fold threat from the growing incidence among them of HIV and
