Female students kicking police vehicle STORYLINE:As images of violence throughout Indian-controlled Kashmir spread on social media, Kashmiris are feeling renewed anger against Indian forces and demanding justice for what they say is government abuse against them. It was the video showing young shawl weaver Farooq Ahmed Dar tied to the bonnet of an army jeep as it patrolled villages on April 9 that incensed Kashmiris and sparked region-wide debate. \"They (army men) came and tore apart my robe and then I was tied to a jeep and was driven around for about 28 kilometers,\" Dar said. Police have since registered a criminal case against unnamed Indian soldiers, for the first time citing a video as evidence and the army has also initiated its own inquiry.Paramilitary spokesman Rajesh Yadav said the authorities \"will take actions against those men,\" if they are found guilty. Rights groups have long accused Indian forces of using systematic abuse and unjustified arrests in Indian-controlled Kashmir. The Indian government has acknowledged the problem exists, but denies it is part of a wide strategy to intimidate residents and that such allegations are meant to demonize troops. They've also done little to bring any perpetrators to justice: not a single member of India's armed forces has ever been tried in a civilian court for violating human rights in Kashmir.Local rights activist Khurram Parvez of the Jammu-Kashmir Coalition of Civil Society said people feel \"really disgusted with these videos\" and believe that they should seek \"permanent justice in Jammu and Kashmir against these foul practices.\"  A collection of disturbing video clips updated this month, just a few days after a violence-plagued local election on April 9, have since fueled anti-India protests that left eight civilians dead and hundreds injured across the region.Pro-India activists appear to have countered with their own videos, including two recently circulated showing militants forcing people to chant anti-India slogans at gunpoint.In another video, an Indian paramilitary soldier is showed being jeered and heckled by young Kashmiri protesters on polling day. That video outraged Indian commentators and news channels, which praised the soldiers for their restraint and called for stern action to be taken against the Kashmiris. Authorities responded by quickly arresting three men identified as hecklers in the video and charging them with attacking the soldier. \"The troops, they have shown restraint of highest level,\" said Yadav.Students have been rising up this month, rallying at anti-India demonstrations and facing off against heavily armed riot police and paramilitary soldiers across the region.Among the angriest now are young Kashmiris under 35 years old, who have grown up in a politically radicalized society amid the brutal armed conflict and high unemployment. They are also among the most tech-savvy and engaged in social media, and make up two-thirds of the territory's population of nearly 13 million.Indian police and paramilitary officials accuse agitators of using social media to instigate violence.Yadav said the government had resorted to \"banning the internet or net facilities\" as \"short term measures to stop circulation of such type of material on the social media.\"Students however say banning internet in Kashmir valley amounts to \"curbing the freedom of speech, freedom of expression.\"The Indian chapter of Amnesty International has condemned the videos from both sides for inciting anger and violence, and urged an investigation.India and Pakistan each administer a portion of Kashmir, but both claim the Himalayan territory in its entirety. Most people in the Indian-controlled portion favor independence or a merger with Pakistan.Rebel groups have been fighting government forces since 1989. About 70,000 people have been killed in the uprising and in a subsequent Indian military crackdown. India and Pakistan have fought two wars over control of Kashmir.Rebel groups have largely been suppressed by Indian forces in recent years.
