Cars driving near Piazza Venezia squareLEADIN: As authorities the world over struggle to effectively tackle air pollution, in Italy a smog tracker for citizens is promising to help draw up air quality maps. The technology is designed to help people choose areas with good air quality, warning about those with dangerous pollution levels. STORYLINEItalian researchers have created a device that keeps people informed about high pollution concentrations in the areas where they're walking or biking. The technology comes as European countries contrast environmental risks with mixed results: a 15 February European Commission Directive has just warned Germany, France, Spain, Italy and the United Kingdom about \"continued air pollution breaches\".Smog tracker MONICA was devised by scientists at ENEA, Italy's National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development. The device comes in the form of a small box that can be easily placed on a motorcycle, a bike or on a child buggy, recording air quality levels in real time as users move around town. MONICA is synched with a smart phone app and works in tandem with it: it processes data collected along the way and creates air pollution maps, providing an instant picture of air quality in different parts of a city. By connecting to the MONICA app on their phones users are instantly shown an air quality map of the area they're in together with a colour index related to pollution ranking: green shows locations with low air pollution; yellow refers to mid- levels; orange and red to sites with high and dangerous concentrations. In Italian, the acronym MONICA stands for \"Air Quality Cooperative Monitoring\"; ENEA experts say the device is an example of citizens' science as its relies on a community of people to collect environmental data. Saverio De Vito is a researcher at ENEA's Research Centre in Portici, a town near Naples, and was the first to launch the idea of MONICA. The smog tracker was then implemented by a team of the ENEA Research Centre in Portici. De Vito explains in detail about how the device works: \"MONICA's signal is transmitted to an interface for users via a mobile phone app. The interface allows air concentration levels to be monitored in real time and features an index about air quality; this allows the user to immediately know the air quality they are breathing in (at that moment). The phone gives a geographical reference to that signal, building a map according to the path travelled in the city. The path features (different) colours according to air quality: green for great air quality and as the quality progressively gets downgraded it turns to red.\"At the moment the technology is designed only for those on a bike or walking with a buggy, but ENEA experts say they're working to make it available to other users, such as runners or those driving a car. MONICA is equipped with sensors to precisely track down a known number of air pollutants, De Vito explains: \"This system is equipped with four electrochemical sensors that allow it to monitor concentrations of carbon monoxide, nitrous gas and ozone together with temperature and humidity. A system of computational intelligence installed on the device allows it to use data from the sensors to estimate concentration levels in real time.\"When users connect to the MONICA app on their phones, they're also shown a percentage that keeps on changing as they move around town and that varies metre by metre. That percentage is another index of air quality levels and is calculated over pollutants concentration limits set by a European Commission directive in 2008.De Vito explains how to make the best of those readings: \"When the index is below 20% we can be reasonably certain that the quality of the air we're breathing is ideal for our lungs, for our health. When the index rises above 20%, reaching 50 or even going above legal limits of 100% or over the air quality is clearly unhealthy.\"Giampiero Celata is the Director of ENEA's Energy Technologies Department that developed MONICA in Portici; he says the technology answers the need to offer people information about the environment they live in.\"The need is to allow citizens to move – biking or walking or with a stroller with children – in the cleanest part of town. In order to do this we need something to tell us what part of the city is cleaner. So MONICA was born to respond to this need: to map, so to speak, to contribute to information about pollution levels in the area where a person with (a MONICA) sensor is biking or walking with a stroller in order to create a map.\" MONICA was developed in 2013 and financed through a crowd-funding initiative on social media. ENEA Rome headquarters researcher, Salvatore Fiore, is responsible for promoting the device; he says MONICA has gained more than 100 supporters since the crowd-funding campaign started in 2016. Fiore says the device allows citizens to take an active role, step in and take charge of their environment and their health. \"We thought of getting citizens involved in this project because we think that direct involvement in paying attention to the environment is the best way to raise awareness about what we breathe and what risks and perils we face if a city is polluted.\"\"So it's a way to make people aware of this problem. People themselves can offer answers with their own behaviour in traffic, by using private instead of public transport or turning on the heat at certain times,\" Fiore explains. After being implemented at ENEA's laboratories since 2013, MONICA is now ready to be tested by citizens: starting from September 2017, 50 people chosen among those who contributed to the funding will be given it for a month and will be able to test it while biking or walking with a buggy. Researchers will benefit from the users' feedback and make improvements if and when needed. The idea is to eventually launch MONICA on the market in the near future. Giulio De Angelis cycles around the city regularly and says an app warning of high pollution spots would be a handy tool. \"Rome has uphills, downhills, hills, so sometimes you're out of breath, your breathing increases and that's when you feel pollution more. There's a lot of smog. Spider nets in Rome are black; they're not earth coloured, so exhaust gases have the upper hand. It (the MONICA app) could be an interesting thing, yes.\"But Murad Piron - a visitor from Belgium believes that a smog tracker will do nothing to help the problem of pollution. \"Rome, Milan, they're so polluted, I mean I don't need an app to know that what I'm breathing is just polluted. So I don't think I would be that interested. Beside if I'm living in the North Pole - I know probably there the air the is fresh - but, no, I'm sorry.\"\"Well, surely for those who have technical skills it can be very useful; for sure. But I have to tell the truth, I don't use my mobile phone a lot so I don't know how to use apps, I'm sorry,\" says Ioana Pop who is originally from Romania. The MONICA device currently costs 500 euro, but researchers are hoping to bring down the price to 200 or even 100 euro. ====Clients are reminded: (i) to check the terms of their licence agreements for use of content outside news programming and that further advice and assistance can be obtained from the AP Archive on: Tel +44 (0) 20 7482 7482 Email: info@aparchive.com.
