Close up of a man in the background of a giant letter LEADIN:An exhibition that explores the psychology behind racism aims to shed light on why racist acts in France are on the rise. \"We and the Others, Prejudices of Racism,\" is on at the Museum of Mankind in Paris.STORYLINE: Exploring the rise of racism and looking at the many labels placed on people of all colours and creed.\"We and the Others, Prejudices of Racism,\" looks at the history of racism, the progress as well as the setbacks, and aims to educate against prejudice.Cabinets showcase colonial-era French scientific textbooks that teach children hierarchical racial difference. There are also once popular everyday products indicating how casual racism was allowed to creep into society. The exhibition comes at a prescient moment - during a divisive presidential campaign that's been rife with anti-Islam rhetoric.\"We want to reach out to all citizens and allow them to use their critical mind and understand how things happened in the past, how we managed to come to all of this (the racism). And to (allow them) to be more critical of the society we live in. Who are the actors that are encouraging me to go that way, who are those using racism notes, what are economical, political challenges, what is hiding behind that? And it seems that, when we understand that (the racism mechanisms), we can then be more vigilant,\" says Carole Reynaud-Paligot, a historian and curator of the exhibition. The exhibit, which includes multimedia, objects and text, makes for uncomfortable viewing. It revisits dark historical moments including segregation in the United States, French colonial rule and the Holocaust. One section features a simple metal funnel dated 1943 that was used to gas people in Natzweiler-Struthof, the only Nazi death camp on current French territory. The curators say racism can't find its roots in science because 99.9 percent of the genome is the same for all people of the world.\"Since the world genome sequencing more than 20 years ago, it has been completely proven that race does not exist. It's not a good representation of the genetic diversity, because in the concept of race you think, the idea is that there is an independent group and that this group are independent enough to create race... like in dogs... which is not the case. When you look at the human genetic diversity, because you have always migrations among different populations, so you cannot define, clearly cut a group like race,\" says Evelyne Heyer, co-curator and a professor of genetic anthropology at the National History Museum. The Rwandan genocide is also featured in the exhibition. A simple radio symbolizing the hate that was aired through the 'Radio Télévision Libre des Mille Collines - RTLMC' (\"Thousand Hills Free Radio and Television\"). But the exhibit is rooted in the present day.It presents newly published research, which shows that while racial tolerance is generally increasing, racist acts and threats have been rising over the last ten years in French society. Racism is a thing of a human nature and education, according to Heyer.\"We know now how the brain works. We have to put things in boxes, in a way. We have to categorize things. You know what a chair is, what a table is and animals, and so on. So we have the same process when we look at the human diversity: we tend to put individuals in boxes,\" she says. And despite our DNA being the same, some boxes are given much lower status than others, according to Reynaud-Paligot. \"What is alarming today in France is that two categories are bringing up a concern are stigmatized: Romani that we denigrate, unhumanize, animalize and that is very alarming for research that worked on those questions. And the other nowadays tendency is the rise of Islamophobia, a specific anti-Muslim racism, turned against the religion.\"Alecia McKenzie is a Jamaican novelist who's been living in Paris for eight years and says she's recently noticed a shift in French society. \"I think that since 2015 there is a sense of distrust which is, I suppose, is only natural. And being from somewhere else, being a foreigner, I feel that. I think other people must feel it as well. These incidents, I think, polarized people and sometimes politicians use them to create even a greater divide.\"The exhibit runs until January 8 2018.====Clients are reminded: (i) to check the terms of their licence agreements for use of content outside news programming and that further advice and assistance can be obtained from the AP Archive on: Tel +44 (0) 20 7482 7482 Email: info@aparchive.com.
