Close of Panerai x Nendo installationLEADIN:Retro designs, office chairs by Ferrari, and installations made from potatoes are all on show at this year's Milan Design Week.Designer, Philippe Starck, who's at the event, says the current political climate is stifling new ideas and encouraging buyers to cling to the past.STORYLINE:These potatoes and flowers are hanging from a wall in central Milan.It's just one example of how the Italian city's annual design week is transforming the cosmopolitan space.In this case, design company Piuarch collaborated with landscape designer Cornelius Gavril to present 2,000 flowers held with potatoes on a facade.The installation is called 'Flowerprint' and aims to bring attention to the importance of facades and exteriors in architecture.\"We don't try to sell one product, but we have decided to take advantage of this week to offer an idea,\" says German Fuenmayor from Piuarch.\"It's a scenery for ideas coming from all around at 360 degrees.\"Milan's Design Week is composed of two parts, the furniture fair- referred to as 'Salone del Mobile' - and many other events spread across the city, in its plazas, museums and stores, called 'Fuorisalone.'This year, many designers and brands are giving customers an experience, rather than attempting to sell a product.Salvioni Milano Durini is a new concept store that showcases Italian design. Different rooms and atmospheres are recreated on six different levels.Everything is for sale from the bed to the art on the walls, except perhaps for the fruit presented on a silver platter in the kitchen.\"This is a phase with a lot of changes in design, whether in presentation or on all other fronts really,\" says Gianni Salvioni, the owner of Salvioni Design Solutions.\"The different brands or funds that sponsor different brands are also looking for something different to present themselves and this can be a way to be different when it comes to commercialisation.\"Brands are looking for all kinds of ways to showcase their items.Baxter, known for its indoor furniture, decided to create an indoor forest to present its outdoor collection.Visitors are invited to roam amongst trees and multimedia installations of waterfalls and lakes to experience the furniture on sale.At the Triennale Museum, which holds various exhibits specifically dedicated to Design Week, children are taking centre stage.This new exhibit, called 'Giro Giro Tondo', showcases design elements made for children across time, such as Alessi's famous Cico egg cup.Chinese design student Jia Wu has a concept to help kids play music.Wu designed a set of plastic mouthpieces and keys that can turn a red bell pepper into a harmonica or a zucchini into a flute.\"The materials are everyday objects. The vegetables and fruits also encourage them to eat more healthy food, vegetables,\" explains Wu. \"After making them, they ask their mum and dad, and they say can; 'Can I eat them? And then they just cook it.\"Other designers are revisiting their past.Architect and designer Mario Bellini was too early, by his own admission, with his '932' chair for Cassina, comprised of four cushions held together with a belt.Now he's back with the MB, an updated version 50 years later.\"This armchair was not lucky at the time, after which I believe I designed another forty kinds of furnishing items for Cassina,\" says Bellini. \"But a few years ago we asked ourselves why wouldn't we give justice to this innovation? That's why we are clearly in a deep and long cycle of retro modern, we can say, and today it's impossible to put on the market something creative. It's impossible.\"Bright new ideas can be seen at the Salone's Euroluce area, part of the fair that's dedicated to lighting solutions.Here, visitors were encouraged to dream by watching installations, such as Arturo Alvarez's kissing shadows.Back in the city, Japanese architect Oki Sato, founder and chief designer of Nendo, is also reflecting on the times we live in.He's created a physical interpretation of time in collaboration with Panerai.This installation is carried out in a circular workspace over the course of six days. Visitors are able to see the creation process in real time.After being sliced, grinded, blow-dried and set, timepieces or clocks of various thicknesses are formed day by day.\"Now, it's more about how we deliver messages about experiences, we can buy anything on the internet, why do we need stores?
