Often they use spare pills from other packets to make up a whole one.\"We rely on some people's superfluous medicine and on small units even one, two or three tablets to make a whole package that a person in need can benefit from,\" says Dr. Al-Assal.He thinks that pharmacists are most aware of people's needs.\"Before we were buying (medicines) for 4000 pounds (about 220 dollars), it takes 10,000 (about 550 dollars) or 12,000 pounds (about 660 dollars) per month, to provide the monthly medicine fully.\" he adds.Patients such as Al-Sayyeda Abdul-Jalil, who is suffering from chronic diseases, rely on the service. Volunteers contact her on a monthly basis and tell her to collect the medicines they have prepared for her.In one of the suburbs of Alexandria, in Fatima Al-Zahraa mosque in Sidi Bishr district, 80-year-old radiology and analytical specialist Hosny Hassan is working hard to help people in the local community. \"The rise in the price of medicines now is dangerous, up to 70 percent higher than the old price.\" he says.Conditions to receive medicines from a pharmacy attached to the mosque are simple: the medication is given according to a doctor's prescription or a used strip of medicine. Hosny explains why patients are asked to get a prescription. \"The patients (are obliged) to bring a prescription or a used strip so they don't take the wrong medication, so they can't complain later.\"Pharmacists' Syndicate in Alexandria set up the Medicine is Life committee headed by Dr. Heba Abdul-Aziz Ahmed, board member of the syndicate.\"We serve approximately 450 to 500 patients a month in a way that they can directly receive medicine for their chronic diseases. This is beside what goes to charities,\" she says.She thinks their work is important because the future may be worse.\"The number of arrivals increased by 10 percent and is expected to increase again to 50 percent after the expected increase after six months,\" Ahmed says.Of the patients who benefit the most, she says those who suffer from chronic diseases such as diabetes, disorders of blood pressure, heart diseases and rheumatoid are most likely to need their services.Abdul-Halim Attia is a patient who goes to the pharmacy every month through a charity that sends him with a monthly prescription.\"I come every month to take my medicine through one of the charities,\" he says.Dr. Mervat Fathy, deputy head of the dialysis unit at Alexandria Fever Hospital, believes that such services are a \"kind of community co-operation and solidarity among human beings\" that must be continued to help those in need.Alexandria - 6 March 20171.
