In the effort to reclaim the city, the hunt for IS is slow, tedious work. The soundtrack of the city is of the nearby battle. The houses the police break into and check are mostly empty, residents displaced to other parts of town, or to the camps crowded by thousands of others who also fled the fighting. But the tension is palpable even here - it's not the frontline, but a block or two back in Mosul's Dawasa neighbourhood. IS has been fighting back with suicide bombers and concealed explosives. Every door, every corner, and even every hole in the road poses a potential risk. The policemen believe they are liberators.\"They didn't have a bite to eat. They didn't have food or drink at all. Thankfully, now we're gradually liberating them and getting them out of this situation. You know, we never knew about Sunni-Shiite thing. When IS came, they made this Sunni-Shiite issue,\" says Mithaq Sabir, a policeman with the raiding unit.Born in Hilla in central Iraq, Sabir has seen action in Fallujah, Ramadi and Tikrit, as the Iraqi authorities made their way to drive IS out of a number of towns and cities that the militants took by surprise two years ago. Sabir is an Iraqi Shiite. Most of the Mosul resident are Sunni Muslims.Like many of his comrades, he claims the sectarian divide between the Shiite and Sunni Muslim population of Iraqi was never an issue for him, until IS made it so. But the family returning to their home amid this military search shows how delicate this new-found peace is.Mustafa Ismael Mustafa, a biology teacher from the Dawasa neighbourhood fled Mosul days ago with his wife and children as the fighting intensified. He feels the time has come to return, so his wife, her brother, and his three children navigate checkpoints on their way home. One wrong word or document can spell trouble, as the men of the family are scrutinised by the police.\"He is my relative,\" Mustafa Ismael says as the policemen points to his brother-in-law, a young male of fighting age. \"Yeah, and what is the name of his wife?\" asks a policeman. In Iraq, such information is routinely written in identity documents.\"You shut up,\" he says, and goes to the brother-in-law, while Mustafa Ismael is urged to speak up quickly. A sharp exchange ensues over the name of the wife of Ismael's brother-in-law.Explanations are given but the policemen don't sound convinced. They let the men go anyway, and the family rush back towards their house. Excited to be returning, the children run in only to see the place trashed, and the basement burned. Mustafa Ismael says it was IS who set the house alight, as one of the militants kept threatening to do as they all gathered in the cellar.\"There was money and a laptop here, and they burned it,\" he claims. \"He (an IS militant) said 'get out because I will will burn it before the army arrives.' He said, 'are you getting out, or do you want me to douse it in petrol and burn it?'\"Mustafa says the family fled first within the neighbourhood, then moved to another part of town.Another neighbour has also had his house burned down by IS.Mustafa collects what clothing is left unburned in his home while the sound of gunfire echoes in the air. The city paints a desolate picture of widespread destruction, as a local ferries his sparse belongings in a cart past the shells of buildings, and Iraqi tanks drive by. Meanwhile, the police squad has done its share for the day, re-groups after a short break, and marches back to base. The base is another residential structure within the same part of town which was also once somebody's home. The day brought nothing special and the troops, who have seen much more at times, relax quickly, smoking, spray-painting the walls and watching videos on their phones. For them, Mosul comes in a long line of deployments since the Iraqi government re-grouped and re-trained the military, and sent it to fight the Islamic State militia. They're winning, and their morale is high. \"I will never take it off,\" Sabir declares pointing to his uniform. His buddies nod their approval. \"This uniform will be taken off on one condition: either we achieve victory, or I become a martyr,\" says Sabir.Asked what would he leave as a message to his children, should fate choose the second of those outcomes, Sabir is certain. \"I would tell them this is an honour. God willing, when they grow up, their path will lead them to the police force. And how lucky the one who achieves this honour (to become a martyr) will be.\"While the day is the same as any other for the police, that's not the case for Mustafa and his family. With a house half burned, with no electricity and no running water, and the war still raging along their street, they pack up again, and decide to leave. It's not only the destruction but also the tangible atmosphere of uneasiness and mistrust, cutting invisible lines between the impending victors, Islamic State fighters and the locals caught in the middle. On their way out of the area, they pass a group of Shiite militiamen, celebrating and dancing, marking the overall gain. The militiamen are busy shooting in the air and don't ask any questions. But the family still move cautiously, with the unspoken awareness that a careless move could cost them their lives. Instead of sanctuary, this brief visit home brought a reminder of despair. There is no hope here for Mustafa.Although they might return again one day, the family leaves, hoping to find something better, anywhere but here.++ONLY ON AP++Mosul, Dawasa neighbourhood - 29 March 2017 1.
