Continuing his commitment to the \"greatest generation,\" Steven Spielberg offers the latest telling of World War II stories with the Netflix series.Directed by Laurent Bouzereau, the three-part documentary tells the story of five of Hollywood's biggest directors who put their careers on hold to serve in World War II.  Spielberg, an executive producer on the series, is one of five contemporary filmmakers who give their thoughts on screen. The others are Francis Ford Coppola, Paul Greengrass,  Lawrence Kasdan, and Guillermo del Toro.Th e iconic filmmaker, who posed for photographers with his wife Kate Capshaw, was joined by del Toro and Kasdan for the premiere.\"It's not just filmmaking, it's documentation of true events, and these filmmakers were storytellers,\" Spielberg said. \"A lot of them told stories based on the imagination of writers and novels. But this, for the first time, they went into a genre that they never experienced before, the genre of photojournalism. And you wouldn't think any of them would have any real skills in this area as documentarians. But they did, and they were all brilliant as documentarians, as they had been - and continued to be as filmmakers,\" Spielberg said.Based on the book by Mark Harris, \"Five Came Back\" discusses the experiences of William Wyler, John Huston, George Stevens, John Ford, and Frank Capra, who interrupted their careers to serve their country by capturing different aspects of the war around the globe.The documentary series talks about their success before the war and how their approach to filmmaking changed when they came home.Frank Capra strikes a special chord with del Toro, as an immigrant who was able to capture Americana in his films. \"One of the mythologies that gels, that coalesces during this period is the fact that the American dream, the bravery of this generation, the fight, the honor, the dignity - all these things are seen through the eyes of an immigrant that sees America with a love and passion and care that is very much of a man that belonging to the land. So this is where a lot of the myth is forged by the immigrant gaze upon America,\" del Toro said.Some of Capra's films include,\"It's a Wonderful Life,\" \"Mr. Deeds Comes to Town,\" and \"Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.\"Del Toro compares the struggles that the Italian-born Capra endured during his career to the situation some immigrants face today. \"I think as testimonied in the book, and in the film, even in a positive profile of him, they used to call him a little wop, you know, without any regard. I mean there was Irish immigrants and Italian immigrants, for the best part of the 20th century were looked and frowned upon the way, for example, Mexican immigration is frowned upon right now. They were not looked as positive, productive citizens, and they had to find their way into the American psyche, the culture, the way of living, and what Capra did was forge a mythology for us.\"\"Wop\" was a derogatory acronym (without papers) that was used for Italian immigrants in the middle part of the 20th Century in America. Television journalist Tom Brokaw also admired Capra, and shared a theory on his motivation.\"I always thought that Frank was motivated a little bit by the betrayal of his home country, by Italy, which joined the Third Reich. He was born in Sicily, after all, and he came to America, and he knew what their country was all about. So it was a real passion for him,\" Brokaw said.He attended the premiere with his friend George Stevens Jr. - the son of George Stevens. He admires one of his father contemporaries.\"William Wyler was from Toulouse, on the border of France and Belgium, and he too was an immigrant. And he went into the Air Force, and he wanted to make a film about a B-29 flying over Germany, and he picked out a plane called the Memphis Belle, and they made this wonderful film. Willy went on those flights, and he lost his hearing and he thought he would never direct again. But he got enough of it back to make 'The Best Years of Our Lives' and 'Ben-Hur'.\"Wyler won Oscars for both of those films. Stevens directed such classics as \"The Diary of Anne Frank,\" \"Giant\" and \"Shane.\"Kasdan feels the documentary series will let a new generation of Americans understand the contribution these five directors made during the Second World War.\"Absolutely. That's the service of Mark's book, and of Laurent's (Bouzerau) movie. This is going to make it accessible to a lot of people who aren't even clear now who these great directors are. So the series shows not only what they did in the war, but what they were coming from, and what amazing body of work they had,\" Kasdan said.Kasdan is currently writing the untitled \"Star Wars\" \"Han Solo\" film, and has previously written \"The Empire Strikes Back,\" \"Return of the Jedi,\" and \"The Force Awakens.\" It's safe to say, he's knows Han Solo quite well.\"It comes very naturally. When you've been doing it for 40 years, and I think it was the fourth 'Star Wars' movies I was writing, and Han's always been my favorite character, and my son took over the writing. He's very into it, so it has no time, you know, and now we have a new young Han.
