STORYLINE: Parents around the world are often left bewildered by conflicting reports coming out of food laboratories.Researchers over past decades have been trying to ascertain at what age it is safe for children to eat peanuts.In January the National Institutes of Health (NIH)  in the US decided that children should be more able to build up a resistance to the allergy if they were exposed to peanuts much earlier at about six months old. The American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology which took part in the NIH research found early exposure is far more likely to protect babies from developing peanut allergies than to harm them. The guidelines spell out exactly how to introduce infants to age-appropriate peanut products depending on whether they're at high, moderate or low risk of becoming allergic as they grow.Babies at high risk because they have a severe form of the skin rash eczema or egg allergies need a check-up before any peanut exposure. This could be under the direct supervision of a doctor.The NIH says other parents can start adding peanut-containing foods to the diet much like they introduce products such as oatmeal or mashed peas.Israel which enjoys twenty percent lower allergy rates attributes much of  its success to Bamba, this soft and puffy peanut snack which can be easily introduced to the diets of young children who are beginning to eat solids.Bamba is one of the most commonly eaten snacks in Israel, it's not just baby food, each month ten million packs are eaten by Israelis, adults and children alike.Professor Nancy Agmon-Levin the head of unit for Clinical Immunology and Allergy at Sheba Medical Centre says: \"In Israel, we used to think it's surprising, the sensitivity rate to peanuts is very low, 20 percent less than the U.S. and other European countries. Over the years, the thought arose in Israel that the reason is it is very accepted in Israel to expose very small children to snacks that contain peanut protein like Bamba, and so we thought that this is one of the reasons that children in Israel were exposed from a very young age and they are less sensitive in older age.\"Peanut allergy is a growing problem, affecting about 2 percent of children in the U.S. These children must avoid the wide array of peanut-containing foods or risk severe, even life-threatening allergic reactions.  Before the new advice paediatricians told parents not to allow peanut consumption by their children before the age of three.  But delaying consumption didn't help, and that recommendation was dropped in 2008, although parent wariness of peanuts persisted.Grandmother Elliy Moss supports the change in advice.She says: \"It's like a vaccine, you know, you're giving a little bit and it's vaccinating them for a long time, so it's great, Israelis knew what they were doing.\"The peanut snacks are produced here at Osem's factory in central Israel.Between 150  and 160 million packs are produced each year. Factory manager Eli Ishay is pleased about the change in guidelines.He says: \"Americans are known as consumers of peanut butter, peanut butter is given as nutrition on a piece of bread, in dishes and cakes, which has a high calorie count. The snack is made of corn, it is coated with peanut butter so the calorie count is low comparing to peanut butter and it is regarded as a snack that prevents allergy and is not fattening.\"According to Ishay exports of peanut puffs to the US has increased since the new guidelines were issued.Jerusalem - 15 March 2017 1. In the past, food allergies had one verdict - totally abstaining food you may be allergic to and for sure food you are already allergic to and to be worried all the time, what made lives very difficult for people with allergy risks, and those already allergic. You cannot eat anything outside, and you are constantly worried to an allergic reaction, anaphylaxis, and can cause death.
