Abdulla is a therapist by training.\"We are bringing audiological care, hearing aids, and sign language resources to deaf refugee children. We are welcoming to all kids, but so far we've seen mostly Syrian children. We have a lot of kids who have become deaf as a direct result of the war. And we have some with congenital deafness or communication issues,\" she said.Seven-year-old Jana Faour is deaf and has a hard time expressing herself. Her parents, Palestinian-Syrians, don't have the funds to put her in a school for deaf children, so her mother is teaching her Arabic Sign Language from what lessons she can find on Google. In a makeshift clinic over a petrol station in the Bekaa Valley in Lebanon, Jana is thrilled to meet someone beyond her mom who can sign with her.Gregory Perez is a mental health professional and the president of Deaf Planet Soul.Though Perez signs in American Sign Language, he and Jana discovered there were lots of signs in common and they began to communicate silently and excitedly.For Jana, and for many of the children who have come to this clinic, it is their first time meeting a deaf professional.Perez and Abdulla are both deaf, but Abdulla lost her hearing as an adolescent and speaks English fluently.Seeing Perez's example is as important for Jana's personal development as the technical work of language learning.Six-year-old Aya al-Souqi, timid and diminutive, was a little over a year old in 2012 when a rocket struck her family's house in the Eastern Ghouta countryside, outside the Syrian capital, Damascus.The strike killed her father and, the family believes, damaged Aya's right ear. Shortly afterward, the family moved to the Bekaa Valley in Lebanon, where hundreds of thousands of other Syrians now live as refugees, to wait out a war whose conclusion is still a speck on the horizon.Aya's mother Kinaz Khatib set off for Germany in 2015, crossing the Mediterranean to southern Europe by boat, hoping to secure the right bring her children over.The separation has been especially difficult for the little girl because of her hearing loss. Until she was fitted with a hearing aid by Deaf Power Soul, she had a difficult time hearing her mother on the camera phone.She was also struggling with friends and at school, but she's smiling more now at playtime with her siblings and cousins.On the floor of their one-room unfurnished apartment in the Bekaa, Aya held a camera phone to her gaze and listened to her mother.\"I hear you!\" she said.\"How are you my love?\" asked her mother from Beeskow, Germany.\"How are you\" Aya echoed. \"I miss you a lot.\" The Deaf Planet Soul team held workshops for children over ten days in different locations in Lebanon.
