The company has unveiled a new periscope-style double lens camera, which is designed to give users 5x zoom capacity while still fitting inside a sleek smartphone body. STORYLINE: Chinese tech firm OPPO says it is aiming to change the way the world thinks about smartphone photography.The company is trying to set itself apart by coming up with technological innovations to make its smartphone cameras market leaders. OPPO says it is focusing its research and development on creating the biggest possible zoom, the slimmest possible look, and the clearest possible images. So at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the company is not launching a new phone this year, but a new kind of camera. \"We will use two different camera lenses with different focal lengths to achieve an optical zoom effect,\" says King Bai, Hardware Director at OPPO.The two lenses give the camera a 5x zoom - a much bigger capacity than the standard 2x zoom found in most current smartphones. \"5x zoom is fitted and really starts to expand what you can achieve with your camera, whether it's shooting landscape, portraits or closeups, with looseness 5x zoom you can fully capture any subject with ease and freedom. It's a huge improvement over 2x optical zoom,\" says King. The technology was inspired by a submarine's periscope, which uses a prism to angle the light by 90 degrees. \"The periscope is the inspiration behind our periscope style dual camera. To work around the space constraits of the cameraphones, we installed a wide angle lens and a telephoto lens and we also situated the angle of the telephoto lens by 90 degrees. This way, the telephoto lens has the space it needs for the deep zoom, but at the same time we can still keep the device thin,\" says King. OPPO has integrated the new camera technology into a prototype smartphone, in which the camera is just 5.7mm thick. The company is also working on improving image stabilization to make it easier for photographers to get clear shots.
