STORY-LINE: A 1920s race car roars through London.This tulipwood-bodied Hispano Suiza eight-litre racer was built for the wealthy son of Joseph Dubonnet, the French drinks magnate, to race in the Targa Florio... he didn't win and the car was badly damaged when a building collapsed. This exact recreation uses the original Hispano components and looks incredible - even if it doesn't have the tightest turning circle.The Grand Avenue is the standout feature of London's Classic Car Show. Historic vehicles parade through the centre of the ExCel show centre, filling the venue with noise and the distinctive smell of Castrol R oil.Cars from throughout the decades are taking part - like this Lotus Elan series 1 from 1963.The Elan weighed just 585kg and was one of the lightest and best-handling cars of its generation, designed with a perfect balance for precision driving.But the undeniable star attractions at this year's show are the 21 classic Ferraris, with a conservative price tag for the collection of at least £120 million - one car alone is worth around £30 million.The Ferrari collection is curated by Ferrari fanatic Joe Macari, who has been selling Ferraris at his London dealership for decades.\"There are 21 cars here and certainly in excess of £100 million and there's some special cars here today,\" he says.Macari's personal favourite car in the collection is this black Ferrari 250 California, but choosing what else to include was much harder.\"It was a difficult collection to put together,\" he says. \"Because it was trying to choose the best of every era and if we'd done that we'd have 200 cars here. And then to try and slim it down was really tough. So we picked a couple of the cars from the 50s, 60s... just iconic cars... as went along.\"The Italian sports cars might be grabbing all the headlines but there's an exciting new entry to this year's show - British sports car maker Alvis.In the 1930s Alvis was one of the most prestigious car makers and a rival to Rolls Royce and Bentley.Based in Coventry, the company made 125 vehicles until it ceased production in 1967 - a time when small-scale, bespoke, high-end car building made way for mass production.The cars still look as good today as they did back in the 1930s and - with the original blueprints in hand - Alvis cars are once more being made in the Midlands to the exact and original recipe. Richard Joyce of Alvis says: \"As we've got all the drawings that came from the works, I pulled out the chassis drawings, we had new chassis manufactured, we made new tooling for engine components and we manufactured new engines and then we digitally scanned cars and reverse engineered ash frames, so then the ash frames are digitally cut but we still manufacture the coachwork by hand.\"On the Grand Avenue Joyce drives the striking Alvis 4.3 Lancefield. The original was first built for the 1938 Motor Show but is now part of Alvis' modern continuation and can be bought for between £200,000 - £300,000 depending on a custom options.The original design is 1930s, but the technology building these modern classics is all cutting edge.In fact, it's this technology that has made small-scale high-end car building possible once again, helping to save time and costs.\"I think it would have been far more difficult and far more expensive to do it even 10 years ago. The technology of scanning and laser cutting and those type of technology have made this job so much easier on the low volume side of things,\" says Joyce.This is the first Classic Car Show since the UK voted to leave the European Union.For a show that focuses on the high-end, most expensive classic cars, has the financial uncertainty surrounding Brexit had an impact on how the super rich splash their cash?Not according to the show director Bas Bungish who believes classic cars represent an better investment than ever before.\"In post Brexit Britain, I think you're absolutely right, investment around cars has been significant, people are scared of what property values may do, putting money in the bank sometimes really makes no difference with interest rates, and cars provide a good investment, a sound investment and it's an enjoyable investment, you can actually get in it and drive it and have the pleasure of the ownership and see good returns,\" he says.However if you're in the market for a new car, be prepared to pay more than you expected. This Mercedes 1935 500K Cabriolet B Kompressor will set you back £1,300,000.And there was a reminder that not all classic cars are as reliable as their modern counterparts. This 1982 F1 car Toleman TG183B couldn't make the tight corner and stalled.The marshals who ran to the rescue got more than they bargained for when the race car backfired.
