The auction includes works by modernist painters Gustav Klimt, Pablo Picasso, and Amedeo Modigliani.Western impressionist and modern masterpieces are increasingly being sought by Asian buyers, according to the auction house Sotheby's.STORY-LINE:Viennese painter Gustav Klimt's colourful Bauerngarten painted in 1907 will lead the other 34 paintings and sculptures in the upcoming Sotheby's London auction in March. The landscape was painted during the golden period of Klimt's career and is regarded as one of the artist's finest. It has an estimate in excess of US $45 million. The auction house's specialist in the art category, Simon Stock says the abstract flowery painting in a square format of 110 by 110 cm is very uncommon.\"It's a special moment in the auction world when you bring a Klimt painting to the auction, because they are exceptionally rare. We haven't seen a landscape by Klimt in the market since 2010, so it's been a long wait.\" The blooming poppies, daisies and roses in a boundless garden is one of the seven works by Klimt of the same theme, the other six are kept in museums.There's been a growing interest in Klimt's paintings in the art world. According to Bloomberg, Oprah Winfrey sold Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer II last year for US $150 million. The artist's erotic symbolist Water Serpents II was sold for US $170 million by Russian billionaire Dmitry Rybolovlev. Both paintings were sold in private deals to Asian buyers.Sotheby's chose to unveil the Klimt in Hong Kong before the London spring auction as they see rapid growth in the number of western art enthusiasts in Asia.\"I can give you an example, the under-bidder activity is increased by 40 percent now. The under-bidders are the unfortunate participants in an auction who don't win the painting, but because of their interest they've tried to acquire it, but they've been out-bid. We've also seen in the global impressionist and modern art market an extraordinary 69 percent increase in the number of buyers of western art from Asian sources and that's been really quite a groundbreaking movement,\" says Stock.The evening sale also includes four major works of Spanish artist Pablo Picasso. It includes one of his most important paintings during World War II, the Cubist style work Plant de Tomates painted in August 1944. Stock says Picasso chose to paint the tomato plant in his apartment to express a spirit of resilience before the liberation of Paris.\"What makes it important is that this comes at the time of great hope. If you were living in Paris in August 1944, you could hear the bombs and gunfire as the allied forces approached Paris for the liberation. So it's a painting that is infused with not just aspirations for liberation but aspirations of a new future.\" The auction will take place in London on 1st March 2017.
