Ceballos Franco may be among an estimated 30,000 babies who were taken from their real parents under the right-wing Franco dictatorship from 1938 to 1975. After someone in Mexico told her she was adopted, Ceballos Franco found a local government document in Madrid saying a baby had been handed over to her Mexican parents in 1968. She found a birth record in Madrid for Diana Ortiz Ramirez, which may be her. Her biological parents were apparently told she had died at birth. Ceballos Franco now wants Mexican prosecutors to conduct an investigation.According to Amnesty international's data, 30,000 babies were stolen in Spain during a period that roughly covered the Franco regime.Of those, 2,083 cases were reported. None of those cases has yet reached the trial stage according to Amnesty's director in Spain, Esteban Beltran.According to Beltran, the pattern that emerged during the Franco regime was to remove babies of families opposed to the regime, and to give them to the authorities, but, according to Amnesty data, this practice continued on after the end of the dictatorship in 1975, as a lucrative business.Mexico City - 16 February 20171.
