As well as continuing to make music, the star has been a TV host and producer, performed with her daughter in the Lone Star Circus and delivered dozens of babies as a certified doula. She even changed her Twitter handle to ErykahBadoula.Thursday night (9 FEB. 2017), Essence Magazine celebrated Badu's work and the 20th anniversary of \"Baduizm\" during its eighth annual Black Women in Music gala in Los Angeles.\"Baduizm\" was released in 1997 and went on to win the Grammy for best R and B album, besting releases by established performers like Whitney Houston, Mary J. Blige, Boyz II Men, Patti LaBelle and Babyface.Reflecting on her debut, Badu admits she wasn't ready for the fame.\"Where was my mind?\" she asked about her mental state 20 years go. \"I was really, really excited about sharing my gift with the world. I was very naïve and green when it came to what that meant. I was honest and that's what I have continued to carry with me, being honest in any kind of way.\"Singer Faith Evans remembers blasting \"On and On\" from the album \"Baduzim\" on her boombox while touring from city to city.\"I was on promotional tour for my first album, 'Faith',\" recalled Evans. \"I did a lot of promo D'Angelo at the time, actually. She actually was around quite a bit. I think they were working together or under the same production company, or something because I used to see her quite a bit on the road, maybe working with D'Angelo.\"Macy Gray also remembers being struck by Badu's iconic album:\"I just remember it was something like you never heard before. I remember thinking, oh who is that? It was that kind of moment.\"British singer Estelle was only 17-years-old when \"Baduzim\" was released during a time she was trying to break in to the music business while working part-time as a journalist.\"She was one of the artists, one of the people that kind of kept me pushing and believing in myself and encouraged me to go for myself- my goals,\" said Estelle. \"It's pretty awesome that I know her and I call her sister. We talk, it's weird now but it's wonderful. It's a real thing.\"Singer and dancer Mya was graduating high school when she first heard Badu's, \"On and On.\"\"I was actually a choreographer at the time as a tapdancer and I was choreographing to her song,\" said Mya. \"So that's amazing to actually see her in person, to have had conversations with her. To be at acknowledged, she's an amazing woman, a solid artist in all aspects of art and expression. Very intellectual woman.\"Famed social media sisters Chloe and Halle were also there to celebrate the night. The YouTube sensations are signed to Beyonce's management team and served as Queen Bey's opening act for the European leg of The Formation World Tour. With nine Grammy nominations, the girls admitted to texting Beyonce good luck before the big day this Sunday. \"Oh my gosh, we are always sending our love and positivity and light to her,\" said Chloe Bailey. \"We know she's going to win and she deserves it. She works so hard. Every bit of glory that's coming towards her for this beautiful body of work she created is well deserved.\"Singer Macy Gray is releasing a music video for her new song called, \"White Man\" inspired by the current political climate. \"It's kind of addressing a lot of things that are going on in the world today politically-wise and race-wise, but it's a dance video. There's a lot of talking and so it's all told through dance, it's gorgeous,\" said Gray.Badu said she's still \"working on music every day of my life,\" but that's just part of her creative work. She agrees that the current political state of the nation, will eventually affect her writing. \"I think that as an artist I am automatically a revolutionary of some sorts because just about everything we do as artists is a political statement as long as it's honest and current.
