I went to the club with my cousin and I did not want to do Taekwondo. I was fond of football. I used to play football in the streets with my uncles. In the first two weeks of Taekwondo, I found out that I was good at it. That is why I continued with it.\"21. Close of birds in a cage22. Mid of Samia feeding birdsLEADINTaekwondo is growing in popularity amongst the female community in Sudan.Now women are trying to change negative perceptions of their participation in the sport.STORYLINEThis group of Taekwondo martial artists moves rhythmically to the instructions of a coach.But take a look at the number of pink headscarves and you'll notice around half of this team are women.Taekwondo has recently grown in popularity amongst women in Sudan, despite the fact many here still see it as a man's sport.But women at this club in Khartoum are determined to change negative perceptions regarding women and Taekwondo.\"Of course the community is looking at women playing combat games from a slightly different perspective. They look to them as trouble makers or as if they are violent,\" says Taekwondo martial artist Miriam Ramadan.\"But Taekwondo first teaches self confidence and at the same time to be able to defend oneself in a moment of danger.\"Women here are keen to point out that practising the sport does not violate Islamic law or local Sudanese traditions as long as they wear appropriate clothing.They say as well as the fitness benefits, learning Taekwondo also helps teach girls how to defend themselves.Twenty year-old Samia Hussein regularly practises Taekwondo at this club. However she says her mother was extremely unhappy when she first became involved in the sport.\"Mother was very opposed (to Taekwondo),\" she remembers.\"In the first two weeks of Taekwondo I found out that I was good at it. That is why I continued with it\", she says.And it seems there could be great opportunities for Samia if she continues to train in Taekwondo.Her club has already participated in local, Arab and regional Taekwondo championships, won three medals at a Championship in Libya and a bronze medal in the (all Arabs) championship in
