Various of performance piece \"The Other Story\" by Saudi artist Sara Taibah LEADIN:An art exhibition is being held at various locations across Jeddah, showcasing some of the most ambitious Saudi art seen to date.It's the fourth such show by The Saudi Art Council and features a combination of indoor and outdoor installations.STORYLINE:All eyes are on a fascinating new art exhibition which spans the Saudi city of Jeddah.A disused mall houses the main exhibition of the annual 21,39 event. Here the theme is Safar, or journey.This year non-Saudi curators are involved for the first time as well as some of the country's young and most talented artists.Saudi Art consultant and curator Raneem Farsi says this exhibition takes previous events to a higher level. She feels that the works will take visitors on an extended journey as if they were entering a museum.\"I feel that it is a ground breaking exhibition, a turning point, and it will create a different perception of contemporary art in the Kingdom. There are a lot of surprises for the audience and it looks more like a museum, an institutional exhibition space\", she says.Another significant development is that there are more women than men involved in this year's show.As Saudi artist Sara Abdu explains, artistic expression is incredibly important for women:\"Women need art because it gives them a voice and it acts as a third lung for them. Mediums of expression are rather limited here so art becomes a major way of raising hidden issues and highlights things that are neglected in our society\", she says.The exhibition also tackles the subject of buildings and modern construction.Artwork \"They Flaunt Their Buildings\" by Saudi Artist Nasser Al-Salem features a ceiling mirror which reflects a saying from the Prophet that tall buildings predict the end of the world. It's the artist's way of raising awareness of unregulated skyscrapers rising up all around.The environment is also at the fore in a photographic series showing shepherds at work.In one picture, photographer Moath Al-Ofi shows a wrinkled shepherd out with his flock and says that people in cities often forget where their meat comes from.\"The meat that reaches our table is actually from a harsh environment and I want to show people these shepherds\", he says.Another location is Jeddah's old town or Al Balad, where artist Abdullah Al-Othman has wrapped a traditional house in silver foil.Exhibition curator Sam Bardaouil points out that this is a novel way of highlighting the perilous state of the buildings here, some of which are close to collapse:\"This artwork in the old part of Jeddah is very important. By wrapping it up in silver foil the artist is drawing attention to the plight of houses in Al Balad. As the sun moves around, the reflections are different at different times of the day\", he says.Meanwhile at the ultra new, still to be completed King Abdullah Economic City, eight video installations by non-Saudis gives an international flavour.One of the participating galleries, Athr, exhibits works by five women.Kuwaiti artist Sameera Kadiri is among those exhibiting. She displays pieces of oil equipment as strange underwater creatures, suggesting that future generations won't understand the process of extracting oil.\"We always think of the sea as a big, alien universe.
