STORY-LINE:A copy of 'A Crime in Ramallah' sits on the shelves of an East Jerusalem book store.But since the Palestinian Public Attorney banned the novel many have been confiscated from circulation.The decision to ban the book has provoked a mixed response.Its author Abbad Yahya's lives in Ramallah but is currently away on a business trip. As well as banning his book the Public Attorney has also issued a summons for an investigation against him.Speaking to The Associated Press via the internet he said he did not want to disclose his current location and is not sure if it's safe to return to his home. However he insisted:\"I am a journalist and a writer and I write and I defend the freedom the space for writing and I consider it as my sacred right to think and to write and this is guaranteed by the laws in Palestine and by universal rights and that is what I defend.\"The ban of the novel reached all bookstores in the region. Public Attorney police came and confiscated any left remaining on shelves.Adding to the seriousness of the matter, security forces snatched the distributor of the novel, Fuad Akleek, as he was walking while in town with his wife and children. He told The Associated Press he was detained and questioned in Ramallah for several hours before being released, but only after an intervention from the Minister of Culture. \"We were surprised by the order by the Public Attorney to confiscate the novel and a summons to the author and the publisher and the distributor. The novel was confiscated from bookstores and I was detained because of it\", he says.Palestinian journalist and civil liberties activist Naela Khalil expressed disappointment with the Public Attorney's ban:\"The confiscation of the novel in this manner and the expedited legal actions without any justification proves that this a policing against literature and liberties and freedom of expression in Palestine and this is so regrettable.\"This is not the first time that the Public Attorney has banned printed material. In the 1990s, following the signing of the Oslo accords, PLO chairman Yasser Arafat banned some of the late Edward Said's publications including Peace and Its Discontents: Gaza - Jericho, 1993-1995.However this is the first time that an author has been summoned for investigation for writing a novel. The ban of the novel 'A Crime in Ramallah' did not extend to the bookstores of East Jerusalem. Following the ban, this bookstore sold most of its copies.\"I had about 20 copies and I sold most of them right after the ban was made.
