'Revolution: Russian Art 1917 - 1932' offers a window into one of the most dynamic and turbulent periods in 20th century history.STORY-LINE:A view into Lenin's Russia after the revolution. This striking portrait by Isaak Brodsky is just one of 200 works on show at London's Royal Academy of the Arts. The exhibition 'Revolution: Russian Art 1917 - 1932' is a journey through a momentous period in Russian history captured by varied artists, photographers and sculptors of the time. Art critic Estelle Lovatt says this exhibition gives a different perspective on how history was recorded. \"This encapsulates a certain period in Russia that you just don't get from textbooks. There's nothing more powerful than the artist painting what's going on in the world around him and the fact that artists are seen to be as powerful as soldiers, with their paintbrush using a visual type of propaganda, especially when most of the population were illiterate. It's through the visual arts that a message is passed.\"The exhibition commemorates the country's transition from the October Revolution. From images of people celebrating on the streets to this intimate portrayal of Vladimir Lenin by Isaak Brodsky, the changing mood of Russian life is portrayed. Some paintings have never been seen in the UK before including Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin's controversial painting of the Bolshevik leader lying in state in 1924. It's a unique look at Russian art from a period where new proletarian art for the Soviet state was encouraged until Stalin's brutal crackdown and suppression in 1932. The exhibition explores the complex interaction between art and politics and how the state influenced artists to create works favourable to the new Soviet cause. \"Most of it is propaganda, even when you see paintings of Lenin and Stalin and they're stood there in front of red fabric. Even though magnificent paintings as they are, they're sort of researched back through the renaissance and how those great masters would have painted, but it's trying to propel them and put them up on a pedestal making them holier than thou. Don't forget some of the icons were reproduced of these leaders to replace Jesus Christ.\" says Lovatt. Many of the artworks are on loan from the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg and the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, as well as from private collectors. Photography, sculpture, film, posters and porcelain are featured alongside paintings which were used to motivate and control the population. The exhibition features well known avant garde artists such as Chagall, Kandinsky, Malevich and Tatlin as well as many other artists of the time. This depiction of farmers before the revolution is by Boris Grigoriev and is called 'Land of Peasants'. It's in one of the galleries looking at the impact of collective farming. A portrait, 'Collective Farm Worker' by Pavel Filonov shows how life on the land evolved before the disastrous consequences of famine. The curators also wanted to show that despite the revolution, many artists still chose to focus on images of an eternal Russia with familiar imagery. Marc Chagall's 'Promenade' (1917-1918) celebrates the joy of his marriage to his wife Bella. One of the curators is John Milner, who's a Professor of Russian art history at the Courtauld Institute of Art. He says life changed for the avant garde artists when a new breed of painters like Brodsky and Deineka championed Socialist Realism. \"There's a group called the association of Russian revolutionary artists who were villianously determined to kill off the avant garde, insults, all kinds of fierce, ferocious criticism and they became more powerful as the 20s went on and became a source of Socialist Realism. And they argued very strongly that people needed to be able to understand the art, ordinary people, people on the bus needed to be able to know what on earth it was all about and they couldn't do that with Popova (Lyubov Popova - avant garde artist) or Kandinsky not surprisingly,\" he says. This flying machine is a recreation of a glider by Vladimir Tatlin. His unrealised design from 1929 for the Communist International headquarters in Petrograd synthesised art and technology. It was one of many prototype flying machines created for a new era, when it was thought individuals might soar like birds. Also woven through the galleries are original films, photographs and documents.
