Botanists here say India is a major orchid habitat. The festival curator and glass house supervisor is Eli Biondi. She says: \"The use of medicinal plants the use of plants in cuisine, the use of plants for general well being, so that is what we've found particularly fascinating because this relationship is really important and brings out a messages that nowadays is extremely important, how plants are actually helping us to get a better life.\"These are Vanda orchids, they are known as epiphytes because they do not grow in the soil.Biondi explains: \"Vandas are really special because you can see them here floating, but in the wild they live up on the canopy of the trees, so they are epiphytes, they capture the water and all the nutrients with their roots, up in the canopy. There is where they get the majority of the light because in the forest there's not a lot of light and if you see the roots, some of them are slightly greener and that's where they get the majority of the moisture and in this way they can survive.\"Here in the glass house there are hundreds of Vanda orchids and the way they hang makes it appears as though it is raining flowers. You can see their gnarled and twisted root system completely exposed. During the festival, visitors will be able to take part in workshops for Indian crafts and yoga classes. There are quite a few animals at the festival and they all have a special significance. This tiger looks ferocious, but if you peer a little closer you will see his sharp teeth and claws are made of petals.Kompelli says all the animals here have connections with specific Hindu gods. She says: \"Every animal has got a special place in here. In Hindu traditions especially, for example peacock they're considered as a vehicle of the gods, so they are not killed or not treated so they're (the people) are doing a sin. So they're being protected in one way because they are tied up with a god. So peacock is a vehicle of one of the gods called Lord Subrahmanya and in the same way the elephant is a vehicle of Ganesh.\"Kompelli is keen that the world's flora should be preserved and she believes that placing them with deities gives them some protection.Hinduism gives special importance to nature and followers believe all living things, including plants and animals have a soul. She says: \"I definitely believe this way of tying up natural flora and fauna with culture will always give them a nice conservation status for them.\" Under the Vandas is an ornate swing, it actually represents a wedding swing which would hold the bridal couple during, or after a ceremony.Placed on the seat here is a Holy Basil bush which is sacred to the Hindus. In Hindi it is called Tulsi which means 'the incomparable one', these pots with the herbs are often seen in temples and it's believed that water mixed with its petals raises the souls of the dying to heaven. The festival begins on February 4 and continues until 5 March 2017.London, UK - 2 February 20171.
