This effectively means they wont legally have the right to exist anymore.The Algerian government plans to make this announcement legal in the coming month.Sofiane Djilali, President of Jil Jadid Party, has called the announcement a threat to democracy and a sign of \"panic\" by the government:\"The country is facing lots of difficulties, a lot of pressure regarding the social side of society. This is due to the economic crisis. The government is incapable of organising transparent and democratic political life for this country. It is in the nature of a tyrannical regime to use oppression when it's facing difficulties. This kind of regime represses freedom\", he says.Another party who says it will boycott the legislative elections is Talaie El Hourriyet. Their spokesperson claims the government is particularly intimidated by his party:\"Current power, thanks to police reports and gendarmerie reports, knows that our party is the biggest one. This is a fact. We are the only political party to be present in 1241 towns, the only one that organised 700 electoral assemblies in the past six months and the only one who elects people in towns,\" he says.Speaking on behalf of the National Republican Alliance Party, General Secretary Belkacem Sahli, played down the government's announcement describing it as \"just an idea\" for now. The upcoming elections in Algeria will take place in a tense climate due to the economic crisis that the country is facing. The toughest challenge for the parties will be to motivate people to vote. Turnout for the presidential election in 2014 was just over 50 percent, while for the legislative election of 2012 it was 43 percent. Officially 70 parties will run for the legislatives elections and 20 of them are from the opposition. All 462 seats will be renewed.Algiers - 22 January 20171.
