For the students taking part, the generations of indigenous children forcibly removed from their families can often be a source of inspiration.STORY-LINE:The National Centre for Aboriginal Language and Music Studies (NCALMS) is a new department at the University of Adelaide. It aims to support and preserve Aboriginal cultures, languages and traditions through a range of educational programmes.Hannah Yates is a musician studying at the department. She explains why the so-called 'Stolen Generations' inspire her work:\"And it's just a song, really, connecting everyone through grief. Because we might not have been influenced by the Stolen Generation ourselves but we've all, you know, lost somebody or had someone taken away. And this song is just connecting people and bridging that gap.\"The Stolen Generations describes the generations of indigenous children forcibly removed from their families as part of a policy of assimilation, whereby Aboriginal children were introduced to white families in order to absorb them into white communities. Stephen Gadlabarti Goldsmith is the Kaurna language co-ordinator.\"Here you are amongst the oldest living, surviving, culture in the world. Something that all Australians have been invited to be part of. And a part of that understanding, of course, is through the language.\"He adds: \"Today, of course, we live in the modern world and we need our young kids to take charge, to understand fully the environment they live in so that they can operate and be successful in today's environment, social environment.\"Aaron Corn is the Director of the course:\"The challenge is to come up with ways to enable communities to strengthen and revitalise these languages and all the traditions including song and music associated with them into the future or we risk losing them from the human history entirely.\"The Centre will amalgamate programmes which have been running at the University of Adelaide previously, including the Indigenous music division, which has been around since the 1970s. Karina Lester of the Mobile Language Team, one of the programmes on offer, points out that even though the Aboriginal culture is at least 40,000 years old, the educational tools used at the centre are very modern.\"You know, this project is about developing apps as projects, about a wiki on a computer where people can log on and hear language lessons and all of that. So adapting new technology, but again, also working closely with our elders who are the ones that taught us from the very beginning. When you think about all our history, those people had that language and that language was spoken and taught orally, so two ways.\"Ultimately, the aim of the National Centre for Aboriginal Language and Music Studies is to increase the number of Aboriginal students in higher education.The centre was officially opened on 28 November 2016.
