The aim is what the company calls the 'orange effect'. This is a stimulated metabolism, increased energy and a better toned body.John L. Davidson II is the Orangetheory Fitness studio manager here in West Hollywood. He says: \"We focus on five zone heart-rate training, so we coach you throughout a one hour class to the different zones of your heart. It comprises of 30 minute of cardio and 30 minutes of full-body resistance training, all done with a personal coach. So you're coached through this class for one hour. You're told what to do and you split up between cardio and full body strength training.\"The instructors base their exercise regime on HIIT (high intensity interval training).Physiologically HIIT is supposed to create a switch between aerobic fat burning exercise and the anerobic system which is carbohydrate burning. It's based on the theory that our bodies continue to get signals which for two to three hours post exercise allow more caloric burning. But this type of exercise can be dangerous.Heart rate monitoring becomes vital to ensure people don't go into the \"danger zone\" which doctors say is more than 90 per cent of your predicted heart rate. It's considered to be unwise to attempt without a trustworthy monitor. There have been studies including middle aged subjects, but people need to have a minimum level of fitness before taking part in this short duration of high intensity exercise. There is also a danger that pushing yourself too far too quickly can cause injury to joints and tendons.Doctors also advise minimum rest periods of two days between each session to allow the body to recoup. \"Our theory behind Orangetheory is what we call the 'after burn' trying to get your heart up into the metabolic state for 12 or more minutes in the one hour class and if you can accomplish that you can burn an average of 900 calories throughout the entire workout and in to the next 24 to 36 hours.\" says Davidson. It looks like a long and gruelling shift, but many of those attending say the hour goes by very fast. There are a range of ages here.Nineteen year old UCLA student Chloe Oleary particularly likes the screens that keep track of your performance on the spot. \"It's easy for me to stay consistent with my workout here because I get to keep track of my results and I definitely noticed a difference in my strength and endurance with keeping up with my heart rate and getting to switch to the workout overtime I come\" says O'Leary.Caleb Wilson is twenty-eight.He says: \"I think that there is a big motivational factor when you factor in all the other members working out alongside you. When you have a wrist, heart monitor and you can use the screen it gives you that extra layer of motivation plus nothing beats circuit training. You have the cardio, the weights, the rowing machine, all of it, it ads up to what I believe is one of the most perfect workouts.\" Gail Goldberg is fifty four and keen to stay in shape. What she enjoys is the variety in each class.\"Every time I come, I come four days a week, it's a different class. It's never the same thing. I mean you're always on the treadmill, the rower, and you exercise but it's always different how it's split up so it doesn't get boring and I like the hear monitor because it makes you push yourself to go even harder to get up to where you are supposed to be\" says Goldberg.Cardiologist Dr. Shaun S. Daneshrad says there are benefits to be gained, providing the excercise is undertaken wisely.\"The high intensity provides benefits in terms of control for example for diabetes. It helps you with diabetic control, in that there are many studies that have indicated that the sensitivity of the body to insulin improves with these high intensity exercises to the point that you can get better control of your bloods sugars if you are diabetic. If you have high cholesterol, it's going to help you achieve a lower level of cholesterol with exercise as well. There are many benefits in terms of prevention in terms of cancer, great cancer, prostate cancer, pancreatic cancer, these are all things that benefit from these high intensity interval trainings\" says Daneshrad.Daneshrad has not personally seen evidence of Davidson's claim that you can burn an average of 900 calories throughout the entire workout and over the next 24 to 36 hours. But he has seen figures which show that HIIT can burn up to 15 per cent more calories.Daneshrad says it's best to consult a doctor before beginning any exercise regime. Orangetheory has grown quickly, licensing new franchises since opening its first studio in Fort Lauderdale, Florida in 2010. It now has five hundred studios in forty states across America, as well as six other countries including Canada, the UK, Australia, Mexico, the Dominican Republic and Columbia.
