Gasonet was developed after drivers complained on social media that some gas stations were overcharging customers for fuel.In February, developers in Jerusalem invented what they claimed to be the world's first touch-free smartphone. 'Open Sesame' gave people with limited mobility greater access to smartphone technology through voice commands and head-tracking. In Japan, a tech company came up with a novel way to make ordering food a lot easier and quicker. It involved using an app on a tablet or smartphone, then placing it on a high-tech table mat that sensed your location. Apps were all the rage in Barcelona during mobile tech event Mobile World Congress.Augmented reality games maker Chromville was demonstrating its latest educational app which allowed children to turn their brightly-coloured drawings into smart, interactive learning tools.Children downloaded and printed pages which featured designs, they could colour them in however they wished.Then, they held a tablet over the coloured page and - via the 'Chromville' app - up popped a fun and interactive augmented reality image.Communications tech maker Irisbond was demonstrating its new eye-tracking technology.The company integrated once-expensive eye-tracking tech into regular mobile devices, allowing disabled users to type messages and communicate.San Jose-based Smart Golf was swinging its latest creation, a connected practice club which allowed keen golfers to analyse their strokes using 3D recreations.The club was equipped with its own wireless transmitter which allowed it to connect to a range of smart devices.Smart Golf's dedicated app allowed single and multi-player games modes, meaning users could competitively practice their swings on life-like golf courses.In March, a tablet app was using augmented reality to bring the buildings and stories at Bergen-Belsen concentration camp back to life.Those visiting the concentration camp were able to see guard towers, fences and rows of barracks that once stood there through the app.During World War 2, over 70,000 people died at the northern Germany concentration camp.\"We have to deal now with the legacy of the survivor. We have to honour the victims,\" says app developer Paul Verschure.There was no lack of motivation for these fitness freaks at the Wearable Tech Show in London.The MyZone MZ-3 Physical Activity belt was keeping track of their heart rate to calculate how much effort they were putting into their workout. The company launched a range of sportswear to holster its device, plus a new app, which boosted the social aspect of exercise.In May, a London-based start-up was attempting to revolutionise the way people accessed their sensitive or private information by using a range of biometrics-based technologies.AimBrain developed this facial recognition authentication app which required just a glimpse of a user's face to access financial information.The app analysed different facial features such as the distance between the eyes and different shapes on the face.In April, a UK-based tech company was attempting to make the often luxurious and glitzy world of private aviation accessible to mainstream travellers.Stratajet developed a high-tech price comparison website and app which gathered details and prices on private jets in seconds, rather than requiring potential customers or brokers to manually gather that information.\"We're able to across the board to not just make it cheaper for the super wealthy to fly privately, but far more importantly, make it possible for your mainstay traveller to fly privately as well,\" says Jonny Nicol, founder and CEO of Stratajet.In Berlin, a start-up was letting users read extracts of famous books in fifteen minutes on their smartphones.Blinkist writers read famous non-fiction books, such as 'How to Win Friends and Influence People' by Dale Carnegie, and then condensed the ideas down to bite size snippets called 'blinks'.Reading these 'blinks' was claimed to give the user a decent idea of the main ideas of the book - all in under fifteen minutes.In Indonesia, consumers gained access to a mobile app which allowed them to choose sustainable seafood products. The app recommended which fish species met acceptable environmental standards.Working together with retailers and restaurants, the app's creators hoped to educate people about the importance of making careful choices to protect Indonesia's oceans.At Los Angeles games-fest E3, games maker Spin Master was demonstrating 'Air Hogs Connect', a mobile title which allowed avid pilots to fly a drone through a detailed 3D augmented reality world.Gamers engaged in fast-paced missions and completed challenges - all in an attempt to save the world from invading aliens.At TechCrunch Shanghai, Beijing-based Geek was demonstrating this app-connected smart guitar.The guitar's LED lights connected to a smartphone app via Bluetooth, users then followed the lights to gradually build up their guitar-playing skills.In Germany, Berlin Zoo was using beacon technology to power its latest smartphone app, giving visitors information at their fingertips.The app told people what animals were close by and could send information and alerts directly to a person's phone.When a visitor got near the gorilla enclosure, the app would automatically bring up information about gorillas.\"A lot of people need their information on their fingertips rather than going in to a book or a piece of paper,\" says zoo visitor Ashok Sudhakaran.\"It's much more easier for people to have their information on their fingertips.\"In November, a smartphone app was bringing to life the world of modernist architect Walter Gropius - one of the founders of the Bauhaus art school.Enthusiasts could use the app to explore Gropius' buildings in Berlin and learn about the simple, functional style the Bauhaus group pioneered.In Denmark, a smartphone app allowed users to momentarily \"lend\" their sight to blind people.'Be My Eyes' used a smartphone's live-streaming video camera. Its creators said it gave blind people the confidence to try and do new things. At Slush start-up event in Helsinki, Finland, 'Map My Beauty' smartphone app claimed to be the world's first selfie-powered beauty coach, allowing users to recreate popular looks or imitate famous faces.Using a simple 'selfie' photograph, the app overlaid personalised, step-by-step makeup instructions onto users' faces.
