Now a French start-up has developed horse headphones which play music to help soothe the animals in stressful situations.STORYLINE:The horses here at the Haras d'Elle stables in north western France are bred for show jumping and sport.They have to be in peak condition and travel around the country taking part in competitions.Horses are highly sensitive animals and this can be a stressful life.Being transported to competitions, having shoes fitted, being isolated in a horse box, and being constantly exposed to new environments are all circumstances that researchers say can make horses very nervous. Researchers have found that classical and country music can calm horses down, while rock and jazz have the opposite effect. A recent study by a French researcher has found that playing classical music directly into horses' ears reduces their anxiety even further. The study tested an ear bonnet specially fitted with earphones that play music into the horse's ears.The first prototype of the device was created in 2013 by HorseCom, a French start-up. One of the study's authors is ethologist Claire Neveux - a scientist who studies animal behavior. Neveux is the founder of the consulting firm on equine ethology Ethonova and a consultant for HorseCom. As part of her job, Neveux helps companies test products designed to improve horses' behaviour, such as the earphone device.Her research was conducted in tandem with independent scientists at the University of Caen and CNRS-Universite of Strasbourg, who were not paid by HorseCom. Neveux explains how the device works. \"The bonnet is a classical bonnet used on horses that covers both ears and in the front of the ears, where it's open actually, there is just an earpiece that diffuses music right at the entrance of the ears of the horse,\" she says.\"And then on the top of the bonnet you have a little bluetooth receptor that then will connect to your own phone and when your phone plays music it will play into the ear of the horse.\" The research was carried out in 2015 on race horses at the French National Stud in the Northern France region of Normandy.  Due to their lifestyle, race horses are particularly exposed to stress. The music chosen for the study was the instrumental theme from the movie Forrest Gump.Neveux says it has a predictable tempo that in previous studies was shown to soothe nervous horses. Here at the Haras d'Elle stables, Neveux is demonstrating how the study worked.The horse Alma d'Elle is fitted with the HorseCom bonnet and led into a exercise area where she is left on her own. Neveux is monitoring her heart rate as the Forrest Gump theme is played into her ears. Then the HorseCom device is removed and Alma d'Elle starts cantering around and bucking. This demonstration just involves one horse, so it cannot replicate the original research, which took place over ten days.But Neveux says that Alma d'Elle's response to the device is close to the results of her research. \"First we isolated the horse, but we put the headphone with the music on. And you can see that she has a quite relaxing posture, she's just standing there, looking around and just walking a bit, so she's not stressed at all. Then with the same horses, we took off the headphones and you can see that she shows a few signs of stress which is only just trotting, galloping or even bucking,\" she says.In the original study, Neveux says the researchers tested the horses' reactions in three different circumstances: the first was the HorseCom device playing music into their ears, the second was wearing earplugs to block out the surrounding sounds, and the third was with nothing in their ears at all. The scientists then exposed the horses to two stressful situations: they transported them for 20 minutes and had a farrier shoeing them. They discovered that playing classical music directly into the horses' ears had a calming effect on the animals and improved their well-being in stressful situations. They also found that the horses' recovered from stress more quickly if they had classical music played into their ears. Neveux says stress indicators such as the horse keeping its ears backward were less pronounced after the animal had listened to classical music.The horses heart rate also slowed down more more quickly when the animals had classical music playing into their ears. Neveux and the research teams also tested the HorseCom device in two other typical stressful situations: they made the animals walk in an unfamiliar environment and put them isolation, which is a very stressful experience for animals who are used to being in a herd. Neveux says all the studies established that playing classical music into the horses' ears was able to calm them down. Just like the other horses, Alma d'Elle's heart rate slows when she listens to classical music. \"When you take the heart rate before and the heart rate after when the horse had the music on - just in this condition - the post-stress heart rate was getting back to normal much more quickly than in any other condition which means that the horse was much more relaxed but also, on a practical point of view - for example when you transport him and you arrive at the competition site - your horse is less stressed when it arrives, so it would be a better competitor,\" Neveux says.  Alain Behague is a rider at Haras d'Elle. His job is to ride young horses for the company. Behague says he has been putting the HorseCom device on his horses for a year and now uses it almost every day, because it makes his work easier. \"The HorseCom technology is truly very good to relax the horses. They listen to music as we ride them. They are more relaxed and this way they are more willing to work together so they can learn in good conditions. It's very practical for the relaxation of horses, for calming them down,\" Behague says. Behague adds that he's seen very good results with Alma d'Elle, who he says used to be a bit difficult to handle and found it hard to concentrate. \"I've been able to catch her attention, I rode her well and the horse was well connected to me.
