The Lascaux cave drawings were discovered in 1940 and are considered one of the finest examples of prehistoric art.Carbon-dating suggests the murals of bulls, felines and other images were created between 15,000 and 17,500 years ago in the caves near Montignac, in the Dordogne region.Lascaux was discovered by the tourist industry following its opening to the public in 1948. It became a popular destination for travelers from all over the world. Visitors reached a peak of 125,000 in 1962.But the actual caves have been long closed to the public since 1963 after green algae and other damage appeared to be spreading over the remarkable Paleolithic paintings.UNESCO granted World Heritage site status to the cave in 1979. Now a new replica cave built one kilometre away from the original offers visitors a chance to immerse themselves in a prehistoric wonderland. Not only the size, shape and paintings are faithful to the original, but also the atmosphere: the temperature, humidity, light and sounds are the same as in the original 200 metre long cave. Jean Clottes is an expert in pre-history and Honorary General Curator of Cutural Heritage, French Ministry of Culture. He knows the original caves well. \"The replica (of Lascaux cave) in which we are is extremely good. I know the original cave, I wouldn't say inside-out... fairly well; and it's quite faithful to the original cave. Here we can feel, in a way as in a cave and the way those paintings have been reproduced on the walls is extraordinarly faithful.\"\"Those animals are not just animals to be hunted, they were animal to be worshiped sometimes. They play the role in their beliefs, in their ways of thinking about the supernatural, etc. and people who did the Lascaux, those animals had, certainly, a big role for them\" Clottes adds. Muriel Mauriac, is the curator of the new Lascaux replica cave, she says that artistic representations of prehistoric bulls, cows and other images had deep significance to the artists. \"It seems that everybody agrees that there is an idea of a society that belongs to a group of men who produced this masterpiece. They have not came here accidentally and said 'let's paint today a bull' or 'let's paint today a horse'. There is such a composition of characters and a manner of how they are placed one to each other in the space, that it makes us think of a very complex conceptual scheme, that we might not understand, but that, at that time, represented something to the people who did it.\"The project took four years to complete, at a cost of 66 million euros (70 million USD). It will replace a replica that opened in 1983, which willl close when the new museum opens. The initial replica museum is located just 200 metres from the original cave, and has hosted over ten million visitors since it opened. Nicolas Saint-Cyr is a member of the team who developed and realised the design of the new replica cave. He describes the only image of a human, with the head of a bird, in the cave. \"Here we are (in the replica of) the well which is at the end of the cave, it is 6 metres deeper than other places you can visit in the replica, and here is this famous scene of the well, where you can see the unique representation of a human, or kind of human because in fact this man has a head of the bird. It seems that this man is pushed by a bull, that is itself wounded. You see guts coming out of its stomach and a rhinoceros which completes the scene. So this is a very rare narrative scene in cave art.\"Saint-Cyr says that today's technology helps the public understand the art and the decades of scientific research that has taken place since the discovery of the caves. \"Those artists were engraving stones, then painted over that and again engraved. With nowadays technology, we can decrypt all this work and present it with high end audiovisual methods and that helps to visitors to know as much as experts who took years to analyse all of this.\"In addition to the replica itself, there are other spaces that help visitors to discover the cave: a movie theatre, 'The Gallery of Imagination', and the Cave Painting Center workshop. Saint-Cyr was one of the few allowed to visit the original caves after they were closed to the public in the 1960s. He spent just over twenty minutes inside and describes the emotion he felt, which he hopes visitors to this new museum will also experience. \"It is about being in front of work that is 20,000 years old and gi ing the impression that it is completely fresh painting. It is extremely moving. When you enter the cave you start to speak quietly, you feel like in sanctuary; you have the impression that those animals are looking at you and not only you looking at them. It is moving, yes. I think people here (in the replica) feel a good part of that emotion. \" The new museum opens to the public on December 15 in the village of Montignac in the region of Dordogne in the southwestern France.
