So one of the nation's top design schools has come to the rescue.Staff members and students at the Rhode Island School of Design have come up with a new, adjustable suit that closely resembles an actual space suit.Real space suits are designed to work in zero gravity, meaning they're too expensive and too heavy to use at the NASA-funded Mars simulation mission in Hawaii. The simulated space suits that are used instead wear out quickly and aren't all that comfortable. They're small and provide poor ventilation.The new suit, unveiled Monday in Providence, is expected to be tested during the next Mars simulation mission in 2017 in Hawaii.A yearlong Mars simulation mission ended in August. It was the fourth HI-SEAS, or Hawaii Space Exploration Analog and Simulation. NASA funded the study, run through the University of Hawaii.Andrzej Stewart was the chief engineering officer on that mission. At 6 feet 2, Stewart couldn't zip up the simulated suits, so he wore a hazmat suit instead, which he said was easy to wear but not very realistic.At RISD (often spoken as \"RIZ'-dee\") on Monday, Stewart donned the new suit to see how it fit, how he moved in it and how well the ventilation and radio communications worked. It was the suit's first rigorous test. Stewart said that the ventilation kept him cool and that the suit restricted his movement like a real suit would.Providence, Rhode Island – 5 December 20161. What the suit would do is to help the simulated astronauts there more realistically do their Extra Vehicular Activities, or EVAs. That's when they go outside and have to do activities outside the habitat. And this is sort of our first full up test with the full suit together.\"3. Close up of Stewart removing his visor. I've got what's called the Hard Upper Torso, or a HUT, and that's the big main part of the suit – it's carbon fiber with some soft parts. I've got a pair of soft pants that connect to that, some thick gloves and some boots. Underneath this I'm wearing just some thin workout clothes and an LCG, which stands for Liquid Cooling Garment. That's a vest full of tubes that we run water through and that helps to keep me cool.\"7. Whenever we're testing technologies outside of the habitat, they have to be able to work in such a way that an astronaut wearing the suit can use it. So larger switches so they can use the controls on the equipment using gloves, things that are large enough for the astronauts to manipulate as well as being able to move around the equipment and things like that. One thing I noticed while wearing the suit today it's also very isolating. So, you don't wanna just go outside in your street clothes while on the simulation because real astronauts wouldn't be able to do that. So there's a certain psychological aspect that comes from being isolated from the environment as well that's important that we simulate.\"9. Real space suits are millions of dollars apiece and they come with a whole crew of people to make sure that they function properly. Obviously we don't have resources for that and, in fact, most researchers can't use a real space suit for their simulated missions. So we really were tying to create something that was affordable. This space suit that we've built is roughly $10,000 in materials and equipment, not counting all the labor that went into it.\"11.
