He opens up his pockets but shows there's nothing to give.Yet still the aircraft drops its cardboard bombs on this unnamed cardboard city.Called 'Performance Desperately in Need of an Audience', this play addresses the plight of refugees and the horrors they flee from.Mahmoud Al-Hourani, the Arab Puppet Theatre Foundation Co-Founder and Director, says the production is about \"human rights first of all\".Wordless - but with whistles, classical music and explosions - this performance crosses language and cultural boundaries.It's not a traditional puppetry show. Instead, performers interact with cardboard cutouts and other props.\"We did not use anything related to classical puppetry here, like marionette or gloves puppet. We used a puppet almost close to object theatre,\" says Al-Hourani.The cardboard city represents any of the many places in the world hit by war.And the choice of flimsy material to construct the buildings is deliberate.Al-Hourani says the set is meant to be as \"delicate as much as these refugee families\".The Palestinian says that the theatre group, which is based in Beirut, has been touched by upheaval in the region, friends who were forced to leave for other countries and the high number of refugees in Lebanon.Members of the foundation have also fled the Middle East to seek refuge in Denmark and Canada.And the puppet show has mirrored their experience, with the characters being pushed by waves across the sea to a new country.But as the refugee crisis has evolved the ending has been adapted.\"What changed last six months is that we make the wave kick him back home,\" says Al-Hourani.It's a stark reminder of the increasing difficulty of escaping conflict zones. This is the first performance of the play in the UK. It's being shown as part of London's Nour Festival.As well as Lebanon it has already toured in Sweden, Denmark, and Tunisia.The foundation currently has eight performers and is a non-profit organisation with the mission to encourage puppetry practices throughout the Arab world.'Performance Desperately in Need of an Audience' runs at the Chelsea Theatre in London from October 22 to 23.London, UK - 22 October 20161.
