STORY-LINE:Charo Ngumbao walks through a protected Kenyan forest stalking his prey.Rather than a gun, Ngumbao carries a simple net.His well-trained eye spots his victim and Ngumbao sweeps in to catch a colourful specimen.Ngumbao is a poacher turned butterfly farmer. Since 1993 he has been swishing his net in the forest in the hope of trapping a butterfly. \"Butterfly farming has changed me from being a poacher to becoming a conservationist. By farming butterflies we reduce forest logging and destruction because we get money from butterfly farming. We sell them to the Kipepeo Project. The destruction taking place within the forest is because people want to sell timber and get money. I get money instead from butterfly farming. So I urge those who are still destroying the forest to come and do butterfly farming so that they earn a living through conservation activities,\" he says. The Kipepeo Butterfly Project was started to offer alternative and sustainable livelihoods to people living around the Arabuko Sokoke Forest Reserve. The harvesting of butterflies for international export has provided jobs for former illegal loggers and other unemployed Kenyans living in the vicinity of the reserve, by breeding butterfly pupae for export.Plant specialist Mathias Ngowyo describes what makes the Arabuko Sokoke forest worth saving.\"Arabuko Sokoke is the largest remaining coastal forest in East Africa, and it covers around 400 square kilometres. It's very rich in biodiversity and it harbours endangered species of animals and plants. There are for example around 800 different species of plants within the forest reserve.\"The Kipepeo Butterfly Project has not eliminated illegal logging in the forest reserve, but at least 15 of the butterfly farmers are former illegal loggers.About 300 butterfly farmers in total earn money seasonally from these insects by harvesting their pupae.Ngumbao brings the butterflies he has caught into a cage and awaits the butterfly to lay eggs.A female butterfly can lay about 150 eggs when in a cage, according to the African Butterfly Research Institute in Kenya. The next stage in the butterfly life cycle is the caterpillar stage, then pre-pupae followed finally by the pupae stage. The pupae are brought to the Kipepeo Butterfly Project to be sold and exported.Project Manager Hussein Aden explains where the pupae are sent.\"Live butterfly exhibits there need to import butterflies. We're on the equator here so butterflies breed throughout the year, and we export weekly when there is demand.\"The Kipepeo Butterfly Project operates under the control of the National Museums of Kenya and is one of three commercial butterfly breeding centres in Africa, according to the African Butterfly Research Institute in Kenya.Pupae are sorted according to species to be sent to flying houses, or live butterfly exhibits, predominantly in Europe and North America.Butterfly farmers like Ngumbao make 10 to 60 US cents per pupae.Butterfly World Tropical Garden in South Africa is a typical butterfly display house. Live butterflies are exhibited as a flagship insect species to raise awareness and educate. The building is heated to replicate a tropical environment.Owner Esther van der Westhuizen imports her butterflies from the Phillipines.\"The life cycle of a butterfly can be many months long. But the flight period, there where the insect has these beautiful wings, can be four to 14 days – just that long. So butterfly parks must get in butterflies every week so that they have this beautiful show. You don't import 10 – 20 butterflies in a butterfly park, it's more like 350, or 500 or even 1000 butterflies per week, that you must get in. Thus butterfly suppliers, the people who breed them, must breed huge numbers to provide this commodity to butterfly houses.\"The harvesting of butterflies from the forest reserve is considered to be a sustainable activity according to the African Butterfly Research Institute in Kenya.Gede, Kenya - 29 September 20161.
