The app, called 'FOLISCOPE', is being developed by scientists from the Costa Rica Institute of Technology, with support from taxonomists from the National Institute of Biodiversity and from the National Herbarium, part of the National Museum of Costa Rica. Scientists are developing the app by using curvature algorithms and micropatterning of pixels to detect texture and geospatial information obtained from photographs to automatically identify plant species in Costa Rica. The app will allow users to take a picture of a leave using their mobile phone and obtain information about the species. Scientists are developing the app by first taking pictures of leaves, which are later compiled in a database. Then, they process those images and extract relevant features to develop computer vision algorithms.Longer term goals include using this technique to identify flowers and seeds, among others, according to scientists. The main objective is to generate a tool that can identify species with a 90 percent degree of accuracy and can be used not only by academics but also by students, tourists and the general population.
