STORY-LINE:A robot beats a Chinese drum as the country opens the World Robot Conference 2016 in Beijing. Supported by Chinese government, the conference is aiming to present the latest robotic innovation. More than 200 companies, universities and research institutes are gathering to look at robots specialized in areas such as entertaining, home service, child care, industrial manufacturing and medical use.According to the International Federation of Robotics (IFR), China is by far the largest robot market in the world, with 68,000 robots sold. The nation alone has surpassed the entire European market. However, two-third of industrial robots sold in China are supplied by foreign-based manufacturers. For some startup companies manufacturing robots, the high demand of industrial robots and rising costs of wages are good signs of entering the domestic robotic market. Dongyingxunda is a Shenzhen-based robot manufacturer who used to provide robots for companies like Foxconn where Apple products have been assembled. The company stopped providing robots to co-packers like Foxconn this year and started selling their own inventions for potential robot buyers. \"We can't compete with the other foreign-based manufacturers now, because they started this earlier than us. I'm only thinking about how to catch up with them,\" says Wang Fang, Deputy General Manager of Shenzhen Dongyingxunda Electronics. \"However, in China we have better service as our advantage. As for costs, the country has been greatly supporting the domestic robots and I think that we can rely on them. The support really helped our clients to lower their costs.\"With a national 10-year plan called \"Made in China 2025\" and the \"Robotics Industry Development Plan (2016-2020)\", the nation is aiming to become one of the leading technological industrial nations within just a few years. However, Andy Mok, founder and president of Red Pagoda Resources, a company that provides consultancy to technology startup companies, says that it is still difficult for China's start ups to compete with foreign-based manufacturers. \"So first in a sense it's an undeveloped market in China so as you mentioned. Much of the existing robots here are foreign produced. So what Chinese companies are doing to catch up is not only investing their own R\u0026amp;D, their own manufacturing and marketing capabilities. But I think another very important part of their strategy would be partnerships with foreign companies and acquisitions of foreign companies. So we look at, say in the media world with Dalian Wanda, you know acquiring movie studios, acquiring US movie theatres. Partly also to help grow domestic market, that similarly I think many Chinese companies, especially with venture capital financing, will look at acquisitions and partnerships as a way to accelerate their growth,\" he says.China is undergoing a major transition to work towards high-end manufacturing and innovation.In recent years, the Chinese government has been supporting innovation through start-ups. Among those start ups is Remebot, a high-tech company that has been focused on creating robots for medical use since 2010. Remebot invented robots in 2015 to help doctors with different types of neurosurgery. \"In the meantime we send the surgery plan to hospitals in small cities. When hospitals programme the robot, the robot can follow the plan well.
