The presence of a space that brings the crowds and artists together is important, as it provides a window onto Syrian culture.We can't ask for direct results immediately, but it is important that we have this window and this space,\" she says.The 70-square metre space in central Berlin has an Arabic book corner and a cafe serving Syrian coffee and snacks.It is very small compared to the large Goethe Institute institute in Damascus, but it is the first of its kind.Many of the artists that the institute used to work with in Damascus are now in Berlin, says project leader Joachim Bernauer.Nabil Arbaain played Oud at the opening, and will also play a full concert as a part of the regular program.Originally from Damascus, he has lived in Berlin for over a year, and he has been surprised by how interested the German audience have been in his music.\"I was afraid that people in Germany would not like the Oud or Middle Eastern music but I was surprised because as soon as I started playing, a lot of people want to listen to it. Every day I get more and more requests to play, it is almost overwhelming,\" he says.Alina Amer is a video artist. She will have a solo exhibition in the venue, a chance to connect to a Berlin art crowd.She says that the art will speak for itself:\"We are now almost in 2017 and there are a lot of trends, schools and methods of expression. But of course there is an interest in artist coming from Syria, the issue of nationality or belonging is not important- if the art is of a good quality then there will be interest regardless of nationality and background,\" she says.The Goethe Institute Damascus in Exile opens to the public from today (20 October) until 5 November.Berlin - 19 October 2016 1. So in this situation that the people from abroad come to Germany, an institution like the Goethe Institute that works abroad has to question itself - 'how do we react?' Do we accompany the people? Do we have to be on the flight, as they are? So we decided we will experiment, we will open a temporary, for a temporary time, we will open a space here in Berlin.\"12. I was lucky one of my friends was coming from Istanbul and could bring the Oud. I was really happy and started playing immediately. I was afraid that people in Germany would not like the Oud or Middle Eastern music but I was surprised because as soon as I started playing, a lot of people want to listen to it. Every day I get more and more requests to play, it is almost overwhelming. I'm happy that they accept my music and lately I have started contacting other bands to mix my music with other types of music.
