To her, the human body is a canvas. The Los Angeles-based installation artist has seen her unique painting techniques gather attention worldwide. She paints directly onto the bodies of her subjects, also inanimate objects. Through this technique, she's able to make three-dimensional subjects appear like two-dimensional artworks.Meade uses no canvas to create these so-called \"living paintings\", just acrylic paint and a brush.Through her work she's able to create optical illusions, causing the viewer to guess where the painting ends and real life begins. It's a twist on the artistic technique known as Trompe l'oeil - meaning 'trick of the eye' - which gives the illusion of depth in a two-dimensional work.\"I paint on people in a way that makes them look like two-dimensional paintings,\" explains Meade.\"I paint the shadows as they exist in real life directly onto them. And I create a vision of…if I were to think about how to paint a person on canvas, I would paint that directly on their body and so I would include all the shadows, the highlights, straight brush strokes, colours.\"\"And I also wrap in the background too, the painted person works without the background, but it also adds to the effect a lot, to be able to see the figure emerging from the canvas.\"Meade paints every exposed part of her human subjects, including toes, hair and legs. She paints the skin as she would paint a human on canvas. The artist also paints a backdrop to compliment her subjects. When she's done, this is what she's left with - it's a photo of a painted person, but it's hard to tell whether it's real or not.Meade is self-taught and has never studied art.She actually interned for congressmen and senators on Capitol Hill and only decided to become an artist in 2009.Today, her work is commissioned around the world, including for live art exhibits and personal commissions. She's been hired by Ralph Lauren and car makers Mercedes-Benz and MINI Cooper.\"I didn't study art, I studied politics,\" says Meade.\"And one day I had this idea and I wanted to know what it would look like to put black paint on shadows and then from there I realised if I painted colours on top of colours in the real world, I can make the 3D space look like a two-dimensional painting.\"Meade describes her art as a mixture of painting, photography, art installation and performance art. \"When I paint someone for a live art exhibit, obviously the artwork has to go home at the end of the day to shower and it's all over. And so I take a lot of photos to capture the spirit of the artwork and in that way it's able to live forever.\"27-year-old Britt Harrison is also a painter and jumped at the chance to be live painted. \"It's actually really fun. I've never experienced this before and I just feel like I've entered into a whole new character, like I'm in the scene, like I could just tell my whole personality,\" she says.\"It's like I'm moving and I'm really feeling it. It's been really a great experience.\"27-year-old salesman Christopher Salata says he loved being painted and becoming a part of art history.\"It felt like being in some small way a part of art history, which is interesting because usually art is something that's non-living,\" he says.\"But it's interesting to be alive and then to be inside of a photograph that I will know will go inside of Alexa's portfolio that people constantly check out online and look at. And it's just neat to feel like I'm inside of a painting right now and a photograph at the exact same time.\"Michael Schwartz is a veteran art expert, lecturer and dealer in 19th and 20th century art. He's also the owner of Rodeo Drive-based gallery Galerie Michael.\"When a woman like this comes along and challenges the standard and creates something so unusual and so different, and so unique because it's conceptual,\" he says.\"It doesn't exist beyond the hour or two that she creates it. Once it's created, it can instantly break up. It's not there and that's a really important thing for an artist who has the courage to do something that isn't going to be around. It's impermanent.\"Meade's art has been exhibited in several galleries, including the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery in Washington D.C., the Saatchi Gallery in London, Galerie Ivo Kamm in Zurich, The Grand Palais in Paris and Postmasters Gallery in New York City.
