STORY-LINE:Obstacle course racing is a global sport phenomenon that is a combination of trail running and overcoming obstacles.This event in Johannesburg called \"the Beast\" offers three categories.Those running in the elite or toughest category face 55 obstacles of various descriptions.Sabrina Daolio is a competitor who regularly finishes in the top five for females in South Africa.She says: \"We all face different challenges, whether it's someone suffering with family problems, a divorce, stress, depression, cancer. There are so many different things that we don't know that people have come from, drug addiction and all these really hard obstacles that they face. And the obstacle racing has just taught us that to face our challenges head on and that we can overcome these kind of obstacles.\"Pieter du Plessis who established South Africa's first official obstacle race in 2009 called Impi, explains where the sport draws its inspiration.\"So the military-style fitness training, obstacle course training, that's the basis of this, that's where it originated, that's where it's coming from – the old \"SAS\" and the \"recces\" and the \"parabats\". These kind of courses that we use and build, that was used then. OCR is a new thing, but the obstacles have been there since from the beginning.\"Obstacle course racing requires both endurance and agility. Participants train hard to achieve total-body strength.Marketing Manager Nicolas van Rooyen explains the appeal of the sport.\"There's been a big rise in people being fit and so on, not just in South Africa but across the world. And with obstacle course racing the nice thing about it is while you're being active and you're running and you're training out there, because of the obstacles and how fun it is you don't really think about the intensity of it. I know for a fact that not only in South Africa but worldwide obstacle course racing has grown over the past four years, and it is increasingly doing so.\"Although the sport has been around for over 30 years, obstacle course racing has grown in popularity over the last five years. South Africa's top competitor is Thomas van Tonder.Van Tonder will be competing in the obstacle course racing world championships in Canada from 14 – 16 October 2016.37 countries will be represented at these championships. He says once you try it you'll be back for more.\"It's a challenge firstly, not just for the elite athletes but for every jack and jill out there. And it's something which you can enter as a challenge to yourself. And overcoming it is where the thrill lies, and it's weirdly addictive. Once you start competing in them you tend to come back,\" he says. The Beast is open to anyone over the age of eight.History has been made at this event with the first ever amputee contingent participating in an obstacle course race in South Africa.The elite athletes run with the amputees to help if needed.These amputees are not letting their disability prevent them from living life to the full.Maria Combrink had her right foot amputated following a hiking accident two years ago.She says: \"I think a lot of people think limb loss is the end of your life. And it's fun for me to show people that it really isn't the end of the road for you. There are so many things that you can do. It's like when you are young and you learn to walk, you fall over and you get up and you do it again. And it's the same thing. After the amputation I just go out and I try whatever. And if I fall I'll get up and I try again.\"There are around 2000 races worldwide and around 6.5 million people participate in obstacle course races every year globally, according to the mud run guide.Johannesburg, South Africa - 10 September 2016 1.
