But what we wanted to do was to put that story into a longer perspective. \"To show German history over the centuries. And above all, to ask the question: when the new Germany was born after the fall of the Berlin Wall, two German states came together to make a new country. \"What memories of themselves did every German bring to this new state?\"The chronological exhibition spans from the Holy Roman Empire and the Middle Ages, all the way through to recent times when Germany became famed for its engineering and created an economic miracle in the mid-twentieth century. One section deals with the Second World War, National Socialism and the Holocaust.\"All Germans come to the world through the prism of the Nazi tyranny, the Nazi genocide, the Holocaust and the destruction of Europe,\" says MacGregor.\"That, of course, is a key part of this exhibition. But that is part of a story which is much, much longer. \"So we wanted to begin the story by Gutenberg, where with the invention of printing a German changes the world, makes the modern world.\"Paintings from the German Romantic era are included in the exhibit, but there are no paintings from the more contemporary German expressionism or works from the Dada Movement. That's because the exhibit was never meant to show a full history of Germany or the whole spectrum of German culture, says curator Barrie Cook.\"It's an exhibition of aspects of German culture that have a legacy today,\" he says.\"So we weren't picking great Germans or picking great German art. We were picking German art objects and German creations that had an extra resonance, an extra dimension that the rest of the world, and Germany itself, had a relationship between that subject matter, that form of art, and the national identity. The nature of German mentality.\"The exhibition ends with a painting by Gerhard Richter, arguably Germany's most famous living artist. But unlike many other exhibitions on Germany history, a part of the Berlin Wall is not included. For that, visitors just need to walk outside.A large section of the wall still stands outside the museum. The exhibition opens to the public Saturday 8 October and runs till 9 January 2017.Berlin, Germany - 7 October 20161.
