The only thing you can't do yet is stretch it. Malleable batteries have arrived at Japan's CEATEC trade show. Nearly 650 exhibitors are showcasing their latest offerings and revealing that gadgets are set to become lighter and more flexible.STORY-LINE:Imagine a shirt that measures your heart-rate. Or sneakers that count how many steps you've run. Such wearable devices may be made possible by new technology being unveiled at CEATEC – Japan's biggest electronics trade show.This year, Panasonic is showcasing a flexible lithium-ion battery that measures just 0.55 millimetres thick. It can bend and twist to an angle of 25 degrees more than 1,000 times and still retain 99 percent of its energy capacity.The batteries come in three sizes, providing between 17.5 mAh and 60 mAh of energy - the smallest of which is enough to power a wrist-band heart rate monitor for about four days.But that's far from enough to power appliances such as cell phones, which would need over 1000 mAh of battery power.Eiji Otomura from the Panasonic Wearable Energy Department says one key challenge in developing the technology is finding material that can withstand repeated bending without losing its power capacity.\"If you repeatedly bend it, the surface packaging could break, so we've had to devise ways to find materials that could handle that,\" Otomura explains. \"In addition, we needed to keep in mind mass production. In that sense we needed its specifications be able to handle that, and choose materials that meet the standards required for mass production, I think that was the most challenging part of development.\"These lightweight flexible batteries open up new opportunities for powered devices to be embedded into clothing or other soft materials.Panasonic says its first sample shipments to manufacturers will begin at the end of October. Meanwhile, television displays are also becoming lighter, thinner, and potentially more flexible.Japan's national public broadcaster NHK is developing large thin-screen displays in collaboration with LG Display and Astrodesign.On display at CEATEC is a 130-inch sheet-display that measures just one millimetre thick. The current panel stitches together four displays to create a larger display that plays 8K video in full resolution.The display uses organic light-emitting diodes (OLED), which enables thinner displays and allows higher resolution compared to liquid crystal displays.NHK says it is developing a full-sized 130-inch sheet-display that can be bent and rolled, just like a projector screen.Genichi Motomura, a researcher at the NHK Science \u0026amp; Technology Research Laboratories says these large sheet-displays could replace household televisions in the near future.NHK is spearheading the development and application of high-resolution 8K technology ahead of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.Elsewhere, Panasonic is developing communication devices that pick up the electricity transferred during human touch. Using what is called electric-field communication technology, information is transferred between devices using tiny electric currents that are transmitted through direct body contact.In its CEATEC demonstration, visitors wore wristbands with colour-code information tags embedded. When the person wearing the wristband shakes hands with the demonstrator, the colour-code information is transferred through her hand into another device - her skirt – which then reacts by lighting up in the same colour as the wristband. While the communication device remains a prototype, Panasonic says the technology could enhance security by ensuring information is transferred only when direct contact is made.The annual trade show CEATEC JAPAN runs until Friday (7 October).Chiba, Japan – 6 October 20161.
