Three archaeological marvels destroyed by militants of the Islamic State group have been brought back to life inside Rome's Colosseum.Director general of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, has described the destruction by militants as a \"cultural cleansing\" of the Middle East.Models of the ceiling of the Temple of Bel at Palmyra, the human-headed bull at Nimrud and the Royal Archives at Ebla, recreated here on a 1:1 scale, are now on show for hundreds of thousands of visitors.They will be housed at the ancient gladiatorial arena, Italy's most visited monument, until 16 December thanks to a UNESCO-sponsored exhibition, \"Rising from the ashes. Ebla, Nimrud, Palmyra\", inaugurated on Thursday.The idea behind the exhibition is to raise public awareness of the importance of world heritage sites at risk of destruction and encourage debate on the reconstruction of destroyed artefacts and the restoration of those that remain.The Temple of Bel was a place of worship dedicated to the Mesopotamian God Bel and located in Palmyra, Syria.Before the Syrian conflict erupted in 2011, over 150,000 tourists visited the city every year.  The temple ruins were considered among the best preserved at Palmyra, until they were destroyed by Islamic State group militants in August 2015.A few months earlier, the human-headed bull was crushed during the destruction of Nimrud, the Assyrian archaeological site dating back to the 13th century BC and located on the Tigris River, just south of Iraq's second largest city, Mosul.On April 12, 2015, an online militant video purportedly showed Islamic State group militants bulldozing and blowing up parts of Nimrud.Even the Royal Archives at Ebla have fallen victim to conflict, suffering extensive damage during the war in Syria.The Archives housed thousands of cuneiform tablets in need of urgent care and restoration, but the situation in the country has made it impossible for curators to intervene.The tablets, which played a key role in spreading the Cuneiform writing system first developed by the ancient Sumerians of Mesopotamia, were discovered by Italian archaeologist Paolo Matthiae and his team between 1974 and 1975 during their excavations at the ancient city of Tell Mardikh. Matthiae worked on excavations in Ebla, Syria for 47 seasons, from 1964 to 2010.Three Italian companies, guided by a scientific committee of archaeologists and art historians, used cutting-edge technologies to reconstruct the artefacts, including 3D printers and materials mimicking sandstone and marble.Italian Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni stresses the significance of the project. \"It's a very important operation on a political and diplomatic level considering that, in a context as dramatic as that seen over the last weeks and months in Syria, those responsible for Syrian artefacts agreed to the offer made by Italy and the promoters of this exhibition to restore some of the relics,\" he says.  This project could represent in future a sort of guideline for a possible real reconstruction of the damaged artefacts in the Middle East.\"We paid for this endeavour entirely with a sum of 160,000
