It is being challenged principally by the Authenticity and Modernity Party, or PAM, led by Ilyas El Omari.Prime Minister Benkirane's party, with its lamp logo, made strong gains in municipal elections last year, taking power in most of the countries main cities. However the moderate Islamist party has suffered a number of setbacks in recent months, with several high profile members embroiled in alleged adultery and drug scandals. PJD's supporters are well organised, ideologically motivated and unlike many of their opponents, work without pay to spread the party's message. They hope their party's record in government will see them through: bringing investment in, tackling stubborn problems in the state finances like pension reform, trying to end the endemic corruption within the system and efforts to improve the lot of the countries poorest.Party workers out canvassing found support from women in one of the shantytown slum areas on the edges of capital, Rabat. In an interview at his home on the start of the last week of campaigning, Prime Minister Benkirane defended his government's efforts to bring down foreign debt, which has reached the highest levels since 1998. The government has implemented austerity measures that have angered community groups and public sector unions. On Sunday, police forced back hundreds protesting in Rabat against reforms in the retirement fund.Benkirane has conceded that his expectations of what he could do as prime minister differed from reality, saying he has only been able to successfully pass about 40 to 50 percent of the reforms he intended to implement.Despite frustrations over the economy and extremism, Benkirane is hopeful that his party will be elected for a second term. The PJD has not been so successful at winning over rural voters - some of the countries poorest citizens who have the least access to education. Abdul-Wahab Kayyali, a doctoral student at George Washington University, has been monitoring Moroccan politics believes low rural education is an important factor in how rural citizens vote.Kayyali believes that rural voters are more likely to vote for \"regional notables\" who promise patronage, while urban voters are driven by ideological preference. On Tuesday, PAM held a rally in Kenitra, an industrial town north of the capital, which is a key battleground in the coming poll.Ilyas El Omari, leader of PAM, who hails from the far north Mediterranean coast of Morocco is highly critical of the current government's record. He has called for change and accused the government of causing the \"worst conditions\" in Morocco since independence.Prime Minister Benkirane has dismissed PAM altogether, saying he does not consider PAM a political party, and describing it as a \"media-backed phenomenon\".PAM, which was established in 2008, does not have a clear ideological bent, but describes itself as \"democratic and modern.\" The members of Al Adl Wal Ihsan, or Justice and Charity Movement, took to the streets in their tens of thousands back in 2011 to support the February 20th youth-led reform movement, Morocco's contribution to the Arab Spring.Since returning to the political sidelines, the banned Islamist group remains an outspoken critic of the Moroccan political system and is calling for a boycott of this year's vote, but has not mobilised demonstrations.Spokesman Hassan Bennajeh questioned the validity of the democratic vote, and said the Moroccan royal family govern the country. The centre-right monarchist Istiqlal (Independence) party which partially led the country out of its French colonialism period is expected to also be a resurgent player in these elections.Back on the campaign trail, the PJD's workers keep campaigning late into the night. As a PJD campaign van toured the streets of the capital's Rabat Chellah district, candidate Abderrahim Laqraa says greater priority must be given to the poor, young and women.Rabat - 3 October 20161.
