And that's very unusual because normally women are quite under represented in the art world, not that a work of art is better because it's by a woman, but it's nice to see women being appreciated,\" she says.There are numerous solo shows and group presentations of major women artists.New York gallery PPOW has brought together work from the 1990s as well as younger artists that explores female identity.Portia Munson's \"Pink Project: Table 1994\" is a very clear comment on society's perception of 'girliness'.\"I was trying to figure out what does it mean to be a woman and be associated with this colour, \" she says.\"I was very drawn to pink but also very curious. Like why am I, because I'm a women, being associated with this colour?\"PPOW opened in 1983. Run by women, it has always been a proponent of female art.But gallery owner Wendy Olsoff says, despite improvements, the art world is still skewed towards men.\"I think men definitely sell for more money, are seen as being more sellable. But because there's so many women being shown now, I think in decades to come when they start coming up at auction, and there's as many women as men at auction, and the work becomes so valuable because it's so historic, it's making historical changes, you'll see prices going up. But I do think we're decades away from that. So I think there's a fight going on now,\" she says.This year, there's a renewed emphasis on live, performance art where dancers, actors and performers become canvases themselves.Christine Sun Kim leads a group of both hearing-impaired and hearing artists in her piece \"Nap Disturbance\".Centred on sounds generated at various volumes, it challenges the behavourial norms dictated by a world where the majority can hear.And if all that seems a bit serious, the lavatories provide a bit of an escape.Julie Verhoeven's \"The Toilet Attendent...Now Wash for Hands\" is a fun, colourful and silly space for visitors to relieve themselves.But there is a serious message behind the laughter.She wants to highlight workers in the service industry - and take a subversive swipe at the elitist nature of the very fair where she is exhibiting.\"I think in like an art fair environment, there's such ridiculous etiquette and extremes and people behave quite appallingly at times I think, and I wanted to test, test, test that really. Magnify a few things.\"These are difficult times for the art world.A recent study published annually before the TEFAF art fair in Holland showed the international art market shrank by seven percent last year.It reported the global art market generated sales of 63.8 billion US dollars, that's down from 68.2 billion US dollars in 2014.But auction house Bonham's Ralph Taylor says it's not all bad news.\"I think it's how you understand that seven percent drop. Either you can look at it and things are worth less, or you can look at it that there's volume coming onto the market and it's certainly the latter.\"\"Some consigners, some collectors are a bit freaked out by some of the metrics in the other markets, the financial markets and stocks and everything else, and so they're less keen to sell. But what we're seeing is that quality is really thriving.\"Major auctions and art fairs are still selling work at sky-high prices.In May this year, a painting by Frida Kahlo set a new auction record for the Mexican painter when it sold for 8 million US dollars at Christie's sale of impressionist and modern art.Also taking place alongside Frieze London are Frieze Masters and Frieze Sculpture park.
