Organisers say that when it comes to giving up a luxury, beauty products are rarely on the list.The show's director Ian Archbold says: \"In terms of purchasing and in terms of the market it's fantastic. I mean the vibrancy of the market now, you've got some phenomenal trends that are taking place in the market. Lashes is something that is just sweeping the world over. We've launched a competition this year for that. You have a lot of brands here, you've got a fantastic showing in terms of skincare, in terms of nails, in terms of brows, lashes, all of those sectors are increasing rapidly. The UK consumer is going more and more to salons and the growth of the market is increasing, year on year.\"According to online analysts Raconteur, the beauty industry is worth 17 billion pounds (approx. 22 billion US dollars) to the UK economy. They say consumers are expected to spend an average of 342.90 pounds (approx 440 US dollars) on beauty and skincare this year - a record high. Ninety percent of products are used by women and ten percent by men, the show's organisers say.Unlike previous years where the body was in focus, this year's trend is all about the face, and the eyelashes in particular.  False lashes have been around for a long time, but the new ones are different.Many companies are now making semi-permanent ones which are being judged here today.Although expensive - depending on the sort of beauty salon frequented - they claim to last for months, offering women and men the big lash look with much less effort.Loreta Jasilionyte's Flawless Lashes are sold in scores of countries all over the world.She says: \"The newest trend which is popular all over the world, \"Russian Volume\" we call it, which is like multiple extensions supplied on the one natural lash in a safe way.\"Safety becomes particularly important for semi permanent eyelashes, because if executed badly they can result in eye infections.All the lashes in this competition were done by trained therapists and they were a conservative black and brown, but high fashion followers are likely to have any colour but black, according to Jasilionyte.She says: \"Also it's colour becoming more fashionable like the brown coloured lashes, the red, blue, so it's like matching your eye colour and it's really becoming more and more popular, especially in London.\"Jasilionyte says: \"I guess women always want to be beautiful, not just for the men, but for themselves. So it's just getting more and more popular the beauty treatments, but (it's) always about the face, the eyes, the brows because that's our, you know, the best of what we can show, you know to be honest with you.\"There's plenty here to suggest the \"in\" colours this year are bright and it's not just a vivid red, but all shades of everything - except teeth, where white thankfully is still the most popular colour.International makeup artist and beauty show judge Nicci Jackson says she favours natural colours and shapes, but the current demand is for highly contoured faces.She says: \"I think at the moment people are really into cosmetics. There's a huge beauty boom with the contouring, with the brows and there's so many new brands coming up now and I think beauty now is bigger than it's ever been.\"Each year the show chooses a new theme for the body and face painting sessions and this time it was a tribute to singer and fashion icon David Bowie.Make up artists used the glitter, the bold colours and metallics Bowie employed to create his many looks.Judge Jackson says: \"I'm looking for originality and passion for the era of David Bowie, something that really stands out to honour the legend that he was.\"The artists pick up on themes from songs like \"Starman\", or the \"Young Americans\" and \"Ashes to Ashes\".Make up artist and co-judge Julia Townend says: \"We're really looking, because of the body painting we wanted to be really creative, very original with an influence of something David Bowie inspired, but we didn't want a direct copy we just wanted a little bit of his creative spirit to come into this. A lot of them are picking up on the androgyny side of David Bowie which we're quite excited about.\"Beauty Show organisers say next year they are planning their own massive audit of the industry to get a grasp of precisely how much it is worth to the UK. By then Britain is expected to have officially announced its intention to leave the EU, so it remains to be seen whether the UK's beauty outlook will stay rosy.
