The facility in the capital Pretoria was worried that, in a country that's a hotspot for rhino poaching for the animal's horns, its five rhinos were at risk.So nearly two years ago it decided to safely dehorn the rhino themselves. The zoo's education manger Ulrich Oberprieler says dehorning makes rhinos less susceptible to being killed by poachers who want the ivory of the horn. \"We actually have got four white rhinos here at the zoo and then we have also got one black rhino. And about two years ago we decided to dehorn them because we felt at that stage that there is a threat and we wanted to prevent anything from happening here at the zoo,\" Oberprieler says.About 20,000 southern white rhinos remain in the world, and most are in South Africa. The total population of critically endangered black rhinos is about 5,000, roughly one-quarter of the southern white rhino population. The remaining three northern white rhinos in existence, all elderly, are in a closely guarded preserve in Kenya. An international ban on rhino horn has been in place since 1977. But poaching continues, and an increasing number of the rhinos survive the attacks and need treatment for gunshot wounds or deep cuts from axes or machetes.Record numbers of rhinos have been killed in South Africa in recent years to meet demand for their horns in parts of Asia, particularly Vietnam. Consumers believe rhino horn, which is ground into powder, has medicinal benefits, but there is no scientific evidence to support that.Poachers killed 1,175 rhinos in South Africa in 2015, according to the government. Although rhino poaching is down this year, areas where it has increased include the provinces of KwaZulu-Natal, Free State and the Northern Cape.A few hundred kilometres away from the zoo in the province of Kwazulu Natal is the Gwahumbe, a game reserve with one 8-year-old male southern white rhino, named Vuyo. The owners have decided to dehorn him, to protect him from poachers.Wildlife veterinarian Ryan van Deventer will perform the procedure. Van Deventer explains to the management team how the work will start: \"The procedure that we are going to follow today is we are going to try and dart him from a vehicle. \"Okay, the terrain here is very steep and there's lots of little steep banks and little cliffs and that. He is quite tame so hopefully we can approach him nicely from the game viewer (vehicle). \"We'll dart him, all the other vehicles will stay back. We'll have the helicopter in the air at the same time, just for safety, if he does a runner or he goes into areas where it is difficult to get to and is a danger to him.\"He says the procedure will take 20 minutes. Once out in the bush Van Deventer shoots the rhino in the hind leg and within minutes Vuyo is sedated and pulled to the ground by Van Deventer and his assistants. They blindfold Vuyo and make sure that his mouth is open so that he can continue breathing.Van Deventer draws a black line around the horn where it will be sawed off with a specialised chainsaw. The procedure starts and both the bigger front horn and the smaller back horn are removed. Van Deventer explains: \"So today what we did is we dehorned Vuyo, an 8-year-old white rhino. And the procedure that we did, we initially did a square cut across the horn to get the entire horn off and then what we do is we take the sidewalls of the horn off. \"The front and the back horn we do and this is to try and remove as much of the horn material as possible to make it as unattractive to poachers as possible.\"After the procedure Vuyo is woken up with another drug, the purple liquid used on his horn during the procedure is still visible on the horn stump. The programme manager of the World Wildlife Fund, South Africa, Jo Shaw says that although the practice of dehorning can help to fight poaching, it is not the only answer to the problem. \"Whilst it has great value at certain scales, it is obviously not a wholesale solution. Unfortunately, we simply can't dehorn all the rhinos in Kruger (National Park) or Etosha (National Park), so it is one successful tool to our armoury, but it can't solve the problem on its own,\" Shaw says. It's a regional problem. Zimbabwe's government has said it plans to de-horn the rhinos in national parks, though most of the country's 800 rhinos are in private reserves.Although rhinos use their horns to access food and in social engagements, de-horning them has not been shown to be detrimental, the WWF conservation group said. Analysis from reserves in Zimbabwe has shown it to increase survival rates. However, as the horn grows back, the process must be repeated every year or two. De-horning a single rhino can cost more than $1,200. Because of the costs, de-horning is not practical in very large populations, WWF said.Wildlife veterinarian Jacques Flamand agrees: \"I think dehorning does reduce the pressure on those particular rhinos, but the day might come where all the rhinos are dehorned and it is still worth killing a rhino for just that four hundred or five hundred grams of horn, because the price of rhino horn is so huge that, you know it is worth killing it for half a KG (kilogram).\"But you know until that day comes there is no doubt that a poacher would rather use his bullet for a fully horned rhino,\" he adds.Flamand is part of a programme in South Africa called the Black Rhino Range Expansion Project, which aims to dramatically increase the population size of the endangered species in Southern Africa. The 17th meeting of the Conference of Parties of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), takes place in Johannesburg, South Africa from 24 September to 5 October.Pretoria, South Africa - 22 September 20161.
