Ghosn wasn't the only automaker showing off new electric vehicles at the Paris auto show, as they look ahead to a world of tighter environmental standards on emissions.Mercedes was unveiling a new battery-powered SUV, in part a response to the buzz over electric upstart Tesla. GM's Opel Ampera-E electric vehicle, the Smart FourTwo Electric car and not least, Ferrari unveiled a new limited edition model LaFerrari Aperta convertible.The hybrid two-seater turned plenty of heads at the Paris auto show, where the focus is increasingly on electric vehicles.Only 200 models are being released to the public and they've already been snapped up, despite a price tag of between 1.8 million euros and two million euros (US$2-2.2 million).Executives stressed that internal combustion engines weren't going anywhere, including diesel, which has been under pressure in the wake of Volkswagen's scandal over cars rigged to cheat on emissions tests.Still, most people don't buy electrics because they're more expensive, and because of limited range and places to recharge away from home.Diesel puts out more pollutants but is cheaper to operate and remains very popular in Europe.Automakers are coming up with new electrics to help them meet tougher requirements for fleet average emissions and mileage. Low- or zero-emissions vehicles are especially in focus after Volkswagen was caught rigging cars to cheat on diesel emissions tests.The company has apologised and agreed on a US$15 billion civil settlement with US environmental authorities, state governments and consumers.Paris -  29 September 20161. Obviously anything that goes toward more electric cars is good for us because we have made the choice. This being said, there are still some obstacles, one of them is the lack of infrastructure which is getting better with the 80,000 charging points in Europe today and even on the highways there are no more than 80 kilometres between one charging point and another so things are getting better and the autonomy is getting better so I am expecting this jointly with more strict emissions standards, this is going to help the development and the acceleration of electric cars.\" 9.
