She has a 17-year old daughter who is sick with leukemia which places her family under great pressure.\"I want to take off the pressure on my first child by having a second one,\" says Qi. \"That will help her to reduce the pressure from grandparents. Although I'm much older, I still want to give it a try.\"Dr. Liu Jiaen who runs this private hospital to treat infertility says patients who come here fall into different categories.Some want treatment because their child has died, others are looking for a second child because their first children have serious diseases.  \"After the policy came into force, the situation has changed,\" says Liu. \"Some of the patients come here because they have no child, and some of them need IVF treatment to have a second child because they have an infertility problem. The third type of taking IVF is because some older parents who lost their child want a second one, and the number of these parents is growing.\"Since the one child policy ended this year Liu says the number of patients coming to the clinic has increased by fifteen percent and it is still growing.43-year-old Jing Ying from Qingdao, Shandong province is coming for her first examination today.Jing lives in a village with her husband, a factory worker.Last July she lost her 13-year-old son in a car accident. She says her depression and unhappiness continued until she saw her chance to try for another baby this year.\"I failed to come out from the grief of the loss of my son last year. In February this year, my family persuaded me to have a second baby. I think that Chinese people are living for the kids.\"Although the policy before the relaxation said that Jing was allowed to have a second child, she might be too old to have another one.Jing is one of China's \"Shidu Families\". Those left childless when their firstborn dies.Ji'en Deyun Hospital has a more individualised service and less queueing time, it is much more expensive than a public hospital with 40,000 – 45,000 RMB ($6,000 USD – $6,737 USD) fee for an entire treatment.Over the past two decades, IVF technology has developed dramatically in China.According to the Women's and Children's Department of National Health and Family Planning Commission 700,000 women underwent IVF treatment in 2014.Last November China's Health Commission estimated 90-million women be eligible for a second child.While some families are embracing IVF treatment others opt for Traditional Chinese Medicine.Beijing's Dongzhimen hospital is affiliated with Beijing University of Chinese Medicine. The hospital has seen a 30 percent growth in women seeking for fertility treatment. Most of them are aged between forty and fifty years old.\"Actually, the difference between western medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is that TCM is focusing on the whole body while western medicine focuses more on a specific issue and it is on a 'case by case' basis,\" says Shi Yun a Chinese medicine doctor (TCM) from Dongzhimen Hospital.\"TCM sees the human body as an entirety. For example, if the pregnant woman who gives birth to a second child is too old, that brings the problem of decline in ovarian reserve, so in this case, we would check her syndrome accordingly. TCM cures you by balancing the Yin and the Yang in your body.\"Gong Lingling is coming for seeing a doctor and picking up medicines today. She's trying Chinese medicine after her recent pregnancy ended in a miscarriage.\"It might be a little bit hard for the women above 35 years old to give birth to a baby, so I decided to have some Chinese medicine to make myself more healthy,\" says Gong.The 36-year-old already has a three and a half year old daughter, but she's hopeful TCM will help her to be pregnant again.\"We think that western medicine is more harmful to your body,\" says Gong. \"It is healthier since the Chinese medicine matches with different individuals.\"It's expected the demand for assisted fertility will continue as more women decide to try for a second child later in their lives.Beijing, China – 29 August 20161.
