Families and children watching television in the recreation room38. Close of a shelf of toys in the recreation room39. Close rear view of a father watching television with his child resting on his father's shoulderLEADIN:India's iconic Taj Mahal is roaring with support for childhood cancer this September.Thousands of children with cancer, survivors, and activists, are making their way to the white-marble wonder to spread awareness of the disease. They're also campaigning for better services to treat children with cancer.STORYLINE:It's a noisy affair at perhaps the most tranquil spot on earth.Families with their child cancer patients, campaigners and supporters have travelled here in force to try to make the world take notice. The demonstrations and campaigns will continue for three days. It's been organised by CanKids – a local support organization for children with cancer.\"Go Gold – Taj Mahal. Cure children with cancer,\" they shout in unison. According to CanKids, India accounts for an estimated 20 percent of all childhood cancer cases in the world. With more than 50,000 new cases each year, the country is becoming known for its high prevalence of childhood cancers Despite this fact, many young children receive no diagnosis and therefore no treatment. Almost half of all the children suffering cancer will never even make it to a diagnostic centre in time to treat them successfully. Children in remote and rural areas usually die because they have no access to any health workers with oncology experience Poonam Bagai, a cancer survivor and mother of two is leading the 'Go Gold India' awareness campaign. She is also the co-founder of CanKids. She wants to shed light on the phenomenon and remove stigmas about the disease. \"Why gold? Because gold is the colour of childhood cancer, because our children are priceless and precious and because we are campaigning for childhood cancer to be a child health priority in India. So, 'Go Gold Taj' is part of an international tribute lightning program which started about a year and half ago to actually let people understand that gold is the colour of childhood cancer, just like pink stands for breast cancer. And when we start doing that it starts creating awareness, it starts engaging stakeholders,\" she says. 13-year-old Ankit Ranjan lost his leg to cancer. He was brought to the CanKids palliative care centre in New Delhi, which has now become his second home. The centre has looked after more than 3,100 children since it opened in 2012. Colourful flags hanging from the ceiling represent each child that has come through the CanKids palliative care centre, which draws in volunteer nurses and doctors from all around the world. The butterflies represent the children who have died. Abhi Sharma was only two-years-old when he lost his eye to retinoblastoma - a cancer of the eye. Since his family didn't live close to a hospital with cancer detection facilities, he was diagnosed too late.Paediatric Oncologist, Dr. Amita Mahajan says it's important patients are diagnosed early. \"Lots of families and even doctors think that children don't get cancer and if they do they will be incurable. So our first hurdle is for actually the primary care health provider which maybe the anganwadi (child welfare) worker, which maybe the primary physician for them to know that children can get cancer and when to start thinking about that and then to convince the families to seek optimal healthcare. Our second big hurdle is access, so even in a remote village you felt that they maybe having cancer for them to actually get the cancer diagnosed and then seek treatment, it is a long journey to reach a centre which offers those services,\" she says. Mahajan adds that while pneumonia and diarrhoea continue to be the top child-killers in India, there is a need for support groups like CanKids to ensure governments and communities discuss the problems to address childhood cancer. Deepak Gupta, whose 12-year-old son Amit is receiving treatment, says he received medical help, food, and even shelter, at the CanKids care centre.\"We have got every type of help. Help for medicines, food and place to stay. What else can a person ask for?\" Since 2004, CanKids has helped more than 25,000 children with cancer and last year raised more than $2 million (US) to help families get access to better drugs and doctors. Ritu Bhalla, a CanKids volunteer campaigner, says she wanted to give back to the community after beating the disease twice. \"Being a survivor, we are an example and so we can be advocates (for cancer patients). When we advocate, everybody is going to listen, including government, including other stakeholders, including society. We want to create the change that will help the families that are struggling to get access to facilities, and get the support they need to overcome this phase of cancer treatment and come out happy. We don't want to leave any pain or guilt in their memories,\" she says. Bagai says the 'Go Gold India' campaign has managed to convince the State of Uttar Pradesh in northern India to deploy a special task force to address the issue of a lack of infrastructure and oncologists in the state. Bagai hopes her campaign will spark a change for children with cancer to have access to better treatment, care and support when they approach a hospital. The group has collected more than 55,000 support pledges and hopes to reach more than 250,000 – the number children diagnosed with cancer each year globally. ====Clients are reminded: (i) to check the terms of their licence agreements for use of content outside news programming and that further advice and assistance can be obtained from the AP Archive on: Tel +44 (0) 20 7482 7482 Email: info@aparchive.com.
