Countries including Canada, Japan, the USA, Morocco,...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eA proposal for the conservation and trade of the Anguilla species of eel was discussed at the 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to CITES (CoP17) in Johannesburg on Sunday. Countries including Canada, Japan, the USA, Morocco, Mexico and Peru gave their input and agreed that more needs to be done to protect the American eel (Anguilla rostrata) and the European eel (Anguilla Anguilla). Threats such as barriers to migration, habitat loss, pollution, disease and parasites have reduced some Anguilla species populations to levels requiring that their trade is controlled in order to avoid utilisation incompatible with their survival, according to a document submitted to COP17 by the European Union and its member states. Dr Matthew Gollack, the Marine and Freshwater Manager at the Zoological Society of London, said changes in oceanic conditions also have an impact on eels.  The plight of the Anguilla eel will be discussed again in three years time at CoP18. So the call really is for improved cooperation between all Angiullad eel range states but also for increased collection in relation to trade, but also stock status and other threats. So while we need to look at fisheries, it is very important and the associated trade it is important that we look at that, it is very important that we do that in concert with other threat mitigation, because if we only look at one thing I don't think we are going to make things better for the eel.\"9.
