Close of giraffeLEADIN:The Berlin zoo is using beacon technology to power its latest smartphone app, giving visitors more information at their fingertips..The app can tell people what animals are close by, and can send information and alerts directly to a person's phone. STORYLINE:This gorilla probably knows very little about smartphones, apps and beacon technology. But this app know quite a lot about him.The app, released in July by the Berlin zoo, uses beacon technology.Beacons are small transmitters that can sense when a phone with the app is nearby.It is far more responsive and exact than the GPS signal.When a visitor gets near the gorilla enclosure, the app will automatically bring up information about the gorillas.The same goes for the leopards, penguins, elephants, hippos, polar bears, kangaroos and the bird house.\"The zoo app is an innovative application that we have developed together with a partner firm. You can find your way easier in the zoo,\" says Tobias Grueter, Social media manager for Berlin zooThere is also a feeding alarm to let guests know when their favourite animal is about to be fed and when walking tours are about to start.It is the first app that Berlin zoo has released, and it was developed together with Berlin-based IT company Keylight.The app includes a lot of information about the animals and the zoo, but it is the beacon technology that is likely to be new to most people.Eight beacons have been installed behind information signs around the zoo.\"We have installed so-called beacons at select animal enclosures. They are small transmitters that sends a signal to the phone when the app is on. And then it can show information about the animals nearby,\" says Grueter.The Berlin zoo opened in 1844.It currently has over 20,000 animals from around 1500 species and is one of the major zoo's of Europe.Each year over 3-million guests visit, many from other countries.\"At the Berlin zoo around one quarter of the visitors come from other countries,\" says Grueter.\"And we thought we wanted to give them the information that is on the regular information signs. But with this app they can get the information in for example Russia, Italian or French. \"The app is also available in English and other languages will be added soon, according to the zoo.Ashok Sudhakaran has recently moved to Berlin from India, and he is visiting the zoo with the help of the app.After checking out the gorillas, elephants and leopards he moves on to the penguin enclosure.\"Well the app is really helpful because it gives you information on your fingertips.
