Disabled access to Rio's popular beaches is steadily improving thanks to work by various volunteers and charities.STORYLINE:While blissful Rio beaches like this are freely-accessible to the general public, for those with disabilities, sand can sometimes be a difficult barrier.Some courageous individuals leap into the ocean, but other disabled people need help of some kind.\"You've got to learn mate, like they say, one must never give up,\" says Edison Bastos, a user of the 'Beach for Everyone' tent, where every weekend volunteers help disabled people access the ocean.\"You fall and get up again and move forward.\"The Rio-based charity was founded ten years ago and operates on summer weekends at the number three station on Barra Beach. It's still winter in Rio, but 'Beach for Everyone' is operating over weekends during the Paralympic Games.Volunteers lend a helping hand using these amphibian wheel chairs.Jean Sampaio, a Brazilian rowing para-athlete, is a frequent visitor. He's hoping to compete in Tokyo's 2020 Paralympic Games. Sampaio rarely misses the opportunity for a swim.\"Marvelous, total freedom, doing what you love, it's priceless,\" he says.Volunteer instructors help swimmers - young and old - to overcome any fear of enjoying the ocean waves and learn to relax in its waters.During Rio's Paralympics, 'Beach for Everyone' has also been welcoming many para-athletes from overseas. That provides a firm and durable base for wheelchairs to roll across. When the mats end, this adaptive wheelchair takes over.
