Wide City of Hope signageSTORYLINE: CLIVE DAVIS TALKS ELECTION, DOCUMENTARY AT EVENT HONORING PHARRELL Clive Davis talked up the \"very special\" interviews included in a new documentary about his life at a charity event honoring Pharrell Williams in Los Angeles on Thursday (15 September 2016). At an event benefitting the City of Hope cancer research and treatment center, the veteran producer and music executive also shared what made his \"blood boil\" about the US presidential campaign. Davis has presented a \"Legend in Songwriting\" award to various artists at the annual event including Babyface, Stevie Wonder and Burt Bachrach. \"It's a bit intimidating to be standing in a place where legends – true legends have stood before. And to be presented with something like this from a living legend – Clive Davis,\" Pharrell told the crowd. Davis said he welcomed artists of all types weighing in on politics and the current US presidential campaign. \"You can't ask contemporary artists or filmmakers or directors or actor not to be citizens – not to be concerned citizens. This is a perilous age. It's a terrifying number of problems that have to be dealt with,\" he said. The 84-year-old music industry legend said he was a lifelong Democrat and supporting Hillary Clinton. \"We need a leader. Hillary is a leader. To see her called crooked just boils my blood. I mean, someone who has been First Lady, someone who has been a senator, someone who has been Secretary of State. I mean, there's got to be a more honest, real way of competing – without labeling your competitor in such a derogatory way,\" he said. Davis also talked up a documentary -- still in production -- that's based on his 2013 memoir, \"The Soundtrack of My Life.\" He called it \"the story of contemporary music over the last 50 years.\" Davis praised the artists he'd worked with -- ranging from Bruce Springsteen to Paul Simon to Jennifer Hudson -- for sitting down for interviews.\"This is supposed to be an ephemeral business, OK? But the fact that artists like Simon and Garfunkel – that I worked the first year that I became head of Columbia Records in the mid '60s – came out, gave 2 to 3 hour interviews for this documentary film on my life – very special, very touching, very moving,\" he said. Among the attendees at the event was songwriter Diane Warren, who said she had worked with Lady Gaga on \"a couple songs\" recently that may be on the pop star's upcoming album. Warren won an Emmy Award last weekend for her song with Gaga -- \"Til It Happens to You.\" It had failed to win an Oscar. \"My heart was broken at the Oscars. I really honestly thought that it was going to win. I've been nominated like eight times,\" Warren said. \"Everybody says it's going to win, it's going to win. And it's like ah. It's crushing when it doesn't. But I think that song has done so many great things. ... Then sitting in the audience and hearing the song called and hearing my name – I just started crying.\"The 12th annual Songs of Hope event also featured a performance from singer Mike Posner.
