Close shots of exhibitSTORYLINE:More than a century after it was originally conceptualized and more than 13 years in the making, the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture is getting ready to open on September 24th.While construction teams are working furiously to finish the exhibits, members of the media got a sneak peak of the much anticipated 400,000 square-foot facility on Wednesday.The eight-story museum boasts some 3,000 artifacts - most of them donated - ranging from pieces of a slave ship to Louie Armstrong's saxophone and Muhammad Ali's headgear.The 12 inaugural exhibitions are grouped into three main categories -- history, community and culture -- and cover some 400 years of African American experience in the United States, from the brutal slave trade to civil rights achievements and cultural milestones. Founding Director Lonnie Bunch said museum designers wanted to create a space that confronted America's \"tortured racial past,\" but also uncovered \"the joy, the hope, the resiliency, the spirituality that was endemic in this community.\"The museum enjoys a prime spot on the National Mall, just blocks from the White House, near the Washington Monument.President Barack Obama will help
