There is no longer and need to go through a selection committee. Now, this is good and bad at the same time, because you see how unprofessional, kitschy things are put on display. One can express almost anything one wants through it, anything one feels interested in. It is a code that is a kind of universal code that all people can read and understand. My topics, in the last few years I have made about 23 or 24 exhibitions, each of them absolutely different, concerning topics and techniques. All the subjects were deeply connected with me. The sculptures are on display in the grounds of a private estate north of the capital, Sofia. STORYLINE:An angelic shepherd appears to be walking on water, followed by his sheep. Bulgarian sculptor Pavel Koychev's work \"Pasture on the Water\" is reflected in the still surface of the lake, seemingly blending in with its surroundings. But the sculpture is made of polystyrene foam, nylon and wire - man-made waste materials that Koychev chose as an ironic contrast with the beauty of its setting. This work dates from 2009, but there are now many more of Koychev's sculptures on display here.Fifty pieces that span Koychev's long career form a new outdoor permanent exhibition in the grounds of this private estate near the village of Osikovitsa, some 70 kilometres (43 miles) north of the capital, Sofia.One of these sculptures is Koychev's first work \"The Family\" which he created back in 1967 - but this is an enlarged version. \"It looks different to me. I decided 5 to 6 years ago to enlarge it and I wanted to find out if it can stand the test of time. And as it happens, it can, even in its new dimensions,\" he says. Koychev says he has always had a passion for the large scale. At the beginning of his career he designed small figures meant to be cast later in bronze in a larger size. But instead, he transformed these early works into multi-dimensional art pieces made of polymerized plaster.Art experts say his works are influenced by the British sculptor Henry Moore and Colombian artist Fernando Botero.After graduating from the Sofia Academy of Art in 1966, Koychev decided to be an independent artist rather than a member of the communist state-controlled Union of Bulgarian Artists. He ignored the official art scene and it did not care about him either, which meant that for years he could not take part in exhibitions.Back then, an artist could barely survive if state committees did not give commissions or art galleries did not buy his works, but Koychev remained one of the few who did not compromise on his artistic ideas.\"For me things changed dramatically (after the fall of the communist regime). In recent years he has also had more than two dozen one-man exhibitions at home.A passionate mountain climber and camper, Koychev says he has a special affinity with nature and often chooses to display his works in the open air.Some of his sculptures are inspired by the landscape, which can be seen in the curving bodies that seem to echo the rolling shapes of the nearby hills.\"It may sound outdated, but the human figure intrigues me a lot because it is infinite.
